Slightly OT, but check this numberphile youtube video How Pi was nearly changed to 3.2 - I've heard of it before, but never got the back story as to why/how it actually happened - as always there's $$ and politics involved iirc, pi=3 is an urban legend though

In my opinion, this is a knee-jerk reaction. Next, they will be cancelling White House tours.

On March 1, the operating budget for Grand Canyon National Park was cut by over $1.06 million. Personnel and maintenance/repair cuts have already begun being implemented. Our lead Interpretive Ranger for the Grand Canyon Star Party just got back to work from three furloughs since the end of the last GCSP. The majority of the staff support we access during GCSP will not be on staff this year. Seasonal employee hires for summer are cut, including our astronomy specialist at Desert View with whom I shared most of the constellation tours last year. Other cuts implemented:

Reduced hours at the park's main visitor center;

Longer lines at the entrance station;

Reduced visitor services, meaning fewer rangers to provide programs and to answer questions;

Scheduled and emergency repairs to buildings and park areas have been delayed or cancelled outright;

The reopening of some park roads have been delayed after recent snow damage;

Trails that closed because of damage from rock slides or weather will take longer to repair or permanently closed.

REAL budget cuts implemented in Federal law affecting REAL people. Many of the trained staff for the summer visitor season were NOT hired. Many of these cuts are NOT delays, these are terminations of activities.

The one area not affected is the financial support that we members of the Grand Canyon Association provide through membership fees and donations. We long-time supporters of GCSP will fill in for some of the missing direct support like setting up and taking down traffic control each evening and trying to answer visitor questions about park operations as well as cosmology. But that's only eight days. If budget gets restored, much of the trained seasonal staff will have moved on to other endeavors. GCSP will do just fine, but the regular visitor experience will be a different story.

And these cutbacks are the result of We the People feel the government must take care of us. The spring has run dry.

Reduce your wants and you won't be disappointed when nothing is there.

I disagree, but this is not the place for that discussion.

There is a petition to repeal this at:

Or those who want the service but think its not for them to pay for it.
Nothing is free if you want a service you have to pay the taxes to maintain it.
It's how we got to the moon first.

This contemporary tragedy of the commons is full of partisan blame without any willingness to pay for greatness

Although I would love to add my more the two cents' worth here, I will repeat, even though the topic wants to inspire it, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE FOR THIS DISCUSSION.

We are gonna get "moderated" if it continues.

Start a thread elsewhere, and I will be glad to jump in.

No, just little pieces of it coming down as liquid. Raining on our parade.

This is all very disturbing to me. But what confuses me is this: if the NPS has insufficient resources to maintain levels of staffing, maintenance and facilities at parks already in the system, why are they designating new parks and increasing resources for them? For example, Pinnacles National Monument just became a full blown National Park.

It makes no sense. If you can't administer and care for what you have already designated maybe rather than creating additional Parks we should be downgrading less traveled properties to Preserve or Monument status with commensurate lower personnel and facilities requirements in order to maintain full access and services at properties that are more visited.

Regards,

Jim

It's called overreach -- a common affliction of big government which tries to do everything poorly instead of doing the most important things well.

And defining what are the most important things is an inherently subjective and political judgment that no one can take for granted, and whose definition is not allowed by the TOS of this site.

Meanwhile, widespread government waste and duplication, fraud, and many ridiculously stupid federal programs that cost millions of dollars; and THIS is one of the things they cut???! I just dont understand...

You mean like the lousy $35 million F-35 that they plan to buy 2500 of? Hey, if they bought just 10 fewer of those, they could actually improve and expand services at Yosemite, Yellowstone and Grand Canyon National Parks!

Jim
