Best Alt/Az mount with tracking for a C9.25
      #5752533 - 03/23/13 07:32 PM

I have become use to Alt/Az mounts after using Dobs and my DM-6. I would like to have A Alt/AZ that would track. The largest scope I have to mount is a C9.25. Any Sugestions? Lx80? or others? Also getting a polar alignment is a problem now that the trees are blocking that part of the sky.

You might want to take a look at the Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ6 GT SynScan (in white) aka Orion Atlas Pro AZ/EQ-G (in black).

How much is in the budget? Are you looking for a mount for visual or AP?

My vote is for the SkyWatcher AZ-EQ6 as well. Here is a photo of mine with a C9.25" The mount acts like there is no load on it.

Here is a short video showing the movement of the AZ-EQ6 with C9.25 inside in my house:

I'd check out the soon to be released (in the next 2 weeks) Nova Hitch. Charles' mounts have a great reputation, this one should carry up to a C11 with no counterweights. Will have motors and slow motion hand controls.

Thanks. I plan to use the mount for visual only. My budget is somewhat flexible. Does the Az-EQ6 saddle carry the wide Losmandy dovetails.

What is the difference between the Orion and SkyWatcher mounts other than color? I assume they are the same company????

Yes, it will handle the Losmandy dovetails due to the new style saddle. It is a bit short for my taste and I would like to replace it with an ADM saddle...but it does get the job done. Both the Skywatrcher and Orion versions are made by Synta, differences appear to be cosmetic and both have the same features near as I can tell. Maybe someone can chime in here if they know something different The image below shows a 22 pound TEC 140 ready to go on my Atlas AZ...

Clear Skies,
Brian

Brian, your image shows the Altlas At/Az mount sitting on what appears to be a Losmandy tripod. Did you have to Modify the Atlas to fit. I have the same tripod which I use for my DM-6.

Yes Mike, it's on a Losmandy HD tripod. This requires an adapter from Optical Supports; unfortunately they are temporarily shut down while moving their operation - there is an announcement on their web site. Supposedly they will be up and running later this year and would presumably be cranking out adapters. I can unreservedly recommend this combination, it's rock steady.

Clear Skies,
Brian
