CG-4 & EQ3, same mount?
      #5752606 - 03/23/13 08:15 PM

Hi all,

Are the Celestron CG-4 & the EQ3 the same mount with a different name? I've got an EQ3 & want to put clock drive on it, & I've come across a dual axis set for a CG-4 at a good price. Any thoughts?

Alex.

Don't quote me for certain, but my understanding is they are one and the same.

They are indeed the very same mount. just a difference in the legs. The drives will work for either.

Alas, the Celestron German mount #4 is everyone else's EQ-3. The CG-3 is, you guessed it, an EQ-2. And the CG-5 an EQ-4. Wonder what the CG-1 and 2 were?

I have never verified this but if I remember correctly, there were at least 2 versions of the EQ-3 mount and they required different drives.

I have an older EQ-3, its more than 10 years old, it's fitted with Celestron CG-4 drives. The stepper motor drives that are used with these mounts are slow and if there is any slop, they are frustratingly slow. I finally unhooked the Declination drive and replaced it with a slow motion cable.. must faster and more accurate.

If I were to do it over again, I would buy the single axis drive.

Jon

Single axis drive is definitely the way to go IMO.

Jon. Thanks for the info. Anybody know if this is a fact? I didn't think the design was that old. I thought that before the current EQ-3 design, meant you had a Polaris.
