62mm f11 Layefette rebuild .
      #5752662 - 03/23/13 08:41 PM Attachment (30 downloads)

Hi all , I finished a rebuild on a very sad 62mm layefette f11 I found is an old house we moved into , sad to see a scope in this condition .
I got it for free so went about fixing her up .
The optics in the main tube were perfect so I did not have to touch them , luckly.
The finder was without an objective lense but I have a few 30mm achro's lying around and found one that fitted alright .
The mount needed total stripping and while it was apart I hand made some 1mm teflon bearing surface spacers to run on some fiber washers to replace the fiber washer/alloy casting bearing surface's from standard . This was probably ok when new but sadly woeful now and the new teflon/fibre washers work wonderfully now , super smooth with the right stickability , nice ! .
On the mount it is a very solid one and is easily up to holding the 62mm very solidly .

I got a friend to paint the OTA and finder in a 2 pak Navy internal piping paint , he even managed the pebble effect of the origonal paint , such as it was !! .
I have posted a photo of that effect , but it has not come out well so use your imaginations .

All in all I think it come out ok for what it looked like when I found it , I dont know how anyone can let a beautiful classic scope like this get so bad ???
She has a new lease on life now and looking good .
Hope you all enjoy .

Now just looking for another project .
Brian.

Congrats,
Looks like a worthy project. The mounts on these scopes are very functional and it will look great with some attention. My 60mm f11 Lafayette has excellent optics. So you may end up with a quality and good looking telescope. Best wishes, Bill

Anyone have an idea on about when she was made ? gotta be in the 50-60's ?
they dont make them like this any more .
Brian.

Nice...I have the same one only
On a yoke mount.
I would think mid 60's.
they made them well then.
Great job.

Wow! Looks like you brought back from the brink. Good as new. Great job! I have one of these also and they are superb scopes with a capable mount and very good optics. Go get her out under the stars!

Here's mine, probably mid-late 60's

Wonderful job Brian. You will get a lot of enjoyment out of her. Classic Japanese and German 60mm telescopes scopes with their good optics perform amazingly. It is such a shame the 60mm got such a bad rep that has persisted too long.

Yeah, there are a few of us with those old Lafayettes around. Mine is still in the queue for a "freshening" after several years. Also, mine appears to be more recent than most here, probably late 60's.

It's a Model 342:

Thanks for the kind words guy's its a sad thing to see any scope let to go like my old girl was .
I enjoyed fixing her up , great fun .

Scott , I have had her out a few times and with a .965 - 1/14 adaptor and using good Plossls andd Ortho's she performs very well , the mount is so sturdy and smooth .

And Tara yes its a shame people give the 60mm scopes a bad rap , they probably have never seen the moon in one , like my other 63mm scope , my Zeiss Telementor .
Here she is .
Brian.

Hey guys , I just noticed something , 'Mustgobigger's' engraved plaque on his Alt/Az mount says 62mm's Darrell and Scots look identical to mine so our plaque's say 60mm but my lense says 62mm ? maybe the newer ones like ours have 62mm lenses and the plaques were made wrong ? and they used them anyway ? seems strange .
Heres mine .
Brian.

yes the brink is right , shame to see an instrument made with love in the state my Layfette was in when I saved her .
Yours looks the same as mine .
Here's the 'Pebble' effect , if you look closely .
Brian.
