Levenhuk Ra refractors?
      #5753343 - 03/24/13 07:15 AM

Linky:

http://www.levenhuk.com/catalogue/levenhuk-ra-refractors-ota-items/

Some (really) nice prices what look to be Long Perng or Tawain sourced telescopes as well as other optics.

However, looks to be a faceless vendor similer to what AstroTelescopes was before Hands On Optics became the rep.

Furthermore, the really nice prices i.e., a 115mm fpl-53 triplet for $1849 sounds too good to be true or these are "2nds" type ota's.

Just thought I'd share or a buyer beware.

They appear to be sourced from Kunming United Optics in China.

Yes.

Smaller ota's look like Long Perng.

They have listings on Amazon as a 3rd party seller, but are new and have no feedback.

The 80mm triplet photo is right out of the KUO webpage; the smaller doublet photos are from the Long Perng page.

You've got to love the name; is Levenhuk a corruption of Leeuwenhoek?

Rich

Ahh, very good. I had no clue of the name.

Very cool. Though I don't think all of them are Long Perngs. The 130mm looks like a Kunming similar to the new Meade Series 6000 scopes. Note that unlike certain other (e.g., the 115mm) to does *not* specify FPL-53 for the ED glass. The Kunmings use HK-61 from CDGM, which is similar to FPL-51 rather than FPL-53.

The 72ED is actually on the high side. Astro-Tech sells the same scope in multiple colors for about $20 less. The coolest item is the "EON". The EONs and Equinoxes used Long Perng OTAs. This $1850 unit appears to be identical to those now discontinued Synta-branded units. Of course, the EON was about $1500 when still available.

Perhaps the best deal is the 110mm triplet. It's almost certainly either an Astro-Tech 111EDT or WO 110FLT clone (if you believe Long Perng actually makes different optics for each of those two models). If so, $1250 is a steal. That's what used AT111EDTs normally go for, and way less than WO asks for the FLT110 even when the latter is "on sale".

Regards,

Jim

Jim,

The website says

"One element of the fully multi-coated apochromatic objective lens is made of ED glass with extra-low dispersion, which further adds to the quality of the produced views."

Noobish question, but... Is that normal? A triplet with just one lens made of ED glass? Of course there is no detail on what kind of glass either...

Hmmm

Al

Yep. Normal. Of currently available consumer refarctors the only two triplet models I know of that use dual ED elements are the TOA-130 and TOA-150. Pretty much every other ED triplet uses a single ED element in between two non-ED elements.

Regards,

Jim

I had one of there 90mm f500 APO's ? made by Long Perng for a while and at $799aud ( Andrews Communications here in OZ ) it was a good buy better than the $949.95 of Levenhuk's , great build , awsome focuser , but sadly not an APO by a long shot ! My ED80 at the time blew this 90mm away , easily . shame really as these are a nice scope , just ,,, have I mentioned this before ,,, Not an APO .
Andrews comm. had 5 of these for sale here and it looks like mine was the best of these , I got the 1st one .

Thru the local IIS ( Ice in Space ) astro site 4 of these 5 got sold and the other 3 were quickly returned after a bagging here .
Shame really as the build , as I said is very good , but these are not APO's .
I sold mine at a loss and now have a Takahashi SKY90 with the same specifications except the Tak has 'Fluorite' in its make up .90mm diameter and 500mm f/l , eg. f5.5 .

Buyer beware with these , but I would like to try one or these 110mm f7's at only $1499 here in OZ ??? Got to be worth a look ?
Here is my LP90mm f5.5 .( now sold )
Brian.

Here is the objective , lovely to look at , not so hot to look thru .
Notice it does not mention the letters 'APO' or 'ED' ?
Such a shame as the build is top's .
Brian.

Oh well , while I am on a roll , here is the old ED80 and LP90mm side by side .
I should never have sold that ED80 .
Brian.

Brian, that ota looks familiar.

Got it last year for $550(US)

I also agree with your review. Nice build, ED element (fk-61?) moderately effective for a 90mm f/5.5 though it does outperform a ShortTube 80 achro. Still provides nice low power , widefield views with color fringing on bright objects. Acts like a f/10 achro.

Nice but the real question is what is that massive objective lens it's sitting on?

There's a new ad is the classifieds/refractors from the Astronomy-Shoppe.com Says the Levenhuk are Russian made.

Maybee they are made on the Russian side of the Chinese border.

Probably just careless ad composition. The Levenhuk website says that model comes from the PRC.

...though the Levenhuk website has its own amusing bloopers - such as
Quote:

Due to the inherent characteristics of carbon fiber and its high thermal conductivity, the telescope also requires far less time to adapt to outside temperatures

Also fun to read the Amazon profile, lot of self boasting and of course,Chinese provenience is clearly stated.

the company is from Russia, the Optics are Chinese, I don't know where thay are assembled. we have tested three samples, they all looked very good. 80, 115 and 130 , Fit and finish and color free optics. ( slightly under-corrected ) very nicely made two speed focuser. . We will have samples at NEAF. so stop by and say hi>
