Leica Zoom eyepiece Vario 8.9 - 17.8 mm ASPH.
      #5753883 - 03/24/13 12:48 PM

For the first time, a unique variable wide-angle eyepiece now complements the eyepiece range. Its performance data speaks for itself : 8.9-17.8mm WW ASPH with a subjective field of view from 60° to 80° . Consequently, Leica enables viewing experiences which are unique on this scale.

The eyepiece has new, rubberised function elements and comfortable rotating eyecups, which significantly increases comfort when viewing. As a result, the eyepiece is particularly good to get hold of and also easy to handle when wearing gloves. The eyepiece is also waterproof up to 17ft (5m) plus, to maintain peak performance and prevent fogging, it is nitrogen filled.

The 2" adapter.

This is because the bayonet of the ASPH zoom has about 40mm outer diameter (length about 13mm) which requires some additional distance to the 1.25" nosepiece.

The 2" nosepiece, OTOH, does begin directly at the zoom's body.

I received my Leica ASPH Zoom back after having the problem with the pointy metal grub screws on the adapter pinching the zoom mechanism. Thank you Markus! Excellent customer service, turnaround was very good considering we were shipping the eyepiece to Germany and Puerto Rico and back, then back to Sherman Oaks, CA. The new nylon grub screws work great - they do require a very small flat head screwdriver. Kudos though to Markus for addressing the problem quickly, and there was no charge on my end so that was very much appreciated. I am very happy to have the eyepiece back as it is everything everyone says it is - the quality is exceptional. Chalk up another happy customer for APM!

I like to adresse, that this free of charge repair was a acception, because Leica returned to me the bad adapter and it showed clearly that the metal screw has been turned into the adapter with bad power pushing in the metal a hole 1/2 mm deep , this does not happen by closing screws a normal way and that is the reason why from the hundrets sold , now only reported such as problem.

Leica wanted to charge 250 Euro for repair, that was here first offer, until I talked into them and they did it this time for free.

it is also no fault of us suppling metal screws, sorry guys, but overturning screws making such deep holes is not called normal handling .

normal hand tight the screw hold rock solid and does not make such deep metal holes

so handle this issue same carefull as you handle your eyepieces and telescopes.

have a great weekend

Markus, can the same thing happen to the older 7-22 zooms or just the ASPH?

Yes, Tim, it can happen as well. This is because the bayonet houses moving parts (the barlow lens part of the zoom).

To clarify: I have two 2" adapters, the shorter one has squared-off, flat-ended allen screws and caused no problems; the other longer 2" adapter had "pointy-ended-sharp-like-a-nail" allen screws. The pointy screws are what caused the pinching as they dug into the soft metal of the housing. If you have the older pointy screws I would suggest filing them down just to be sure.
