Moon Occults Beta Scorpii, US Sunbelt, Mar 30-31
      #5758327 - 03/26/13 02:14 PM

The 80% illuminated waning gibbous Moon will occult the +2.6 magnitude star Beta Scorpii for observers in the US Sunbelt, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and northern South America during the night of 2013 MAR 30-31. Folks on a graze path will be able to witness the star winking on and off as lunar hills and valleys pass by. Those located between the two graze paths can watch a full occultation. Immersion will occur on the lunar bright limb and emersion on the dark limb.

I’ve created a graze map, table of Besselian elements, and a Los Angeles preview graphic with data. They can be seen at my webpage for occultations: www.CurtRenz.com/occultations

Photos and descriptions of the event would be welcome additions to this thread. Timing predictions for specific locations will be provided, if you reply to this post with a longitude, latitude, elevation and time zone.

I sent out a challenge to my astronomy club. I know some members live on the northern graze line. Our observing time is an early ~4:30am EDT on Easter Sunday.

Wow! Thanks Curt. That's really impressive. I checked those sites and it looks like I'll be just out of the occultation range. The south approach to the Skyway Bridge and the south shore of Tampa Bay are the place to view. It's just not safe enough for me. I'll see how things develop in my own back yard.

You’re welcome, rookie. How well I remember travelling across the original Sunshine Skyway at its opening on Labor Day 1954. Before that we rode a ferry boat to St. Petersburg. For us kids that was much more fun.

For graze points other than those I provided, here are formulae. They are only accurate for the west coast of Florida. The only input is western longitude as a positive decimal number. All output is decimal and may require conversion to sexagesimal.

L = Western Longitude – 82 (subtract 82 from longitude)

Latitude = 27.393296 + 0.314126 L + 0.008484 L²
Hour = 4.44508 – 0.04436 L + 0.00050 L²

Curt, your predictions were perfection. Here is a photo snapped just before a bank of clouds rolled in.

Thanks for awakening early and sharing your fine photo, rookie. For your next graze I’ll try to keep the clouds away.
