I see this new App is being offered at $2.99. Has anyone bought it yet and any other comments on it yet?

Thanks!

Bob

People on the Sky Safari yahoo group have had a lot of positive things to say about it.

I liked the interface and customer support of SkySafari so much that I bought Satellite Safari just to support their business. It is an amazing app for $2.99. Using the impeccable SkySafari style of interface, you can view ground tracks, sky charts, and the view of the earth from the satellite. Satellite Safari runs 'movies' with varying time steps as well.

What the app does not do (and is not designed to do) is give a list of visible satellites from your location at a given time. You still should use Heavens Above or another iOS app for that purpose. Satellite Safari is the best at showing graphics for a known flyover.

There are a couple small deficiencies in Satellite Safari that the authors acknowledge, and will incorporate in later revisions.

Tom

Sounds interesting, but the lack of a list of upcoming satellites is disappointing. Is there an alert/reminder system? It'd be nice to finally replace the mishmash of apps many of us use!

Sky Safari Plus itself already has some incredibly useful satellite functions. You can add particular satellites to an observing list, highlight them in the field of view, show their path across the sky, and see the times of entrance and exit from the sky.

For those interested in the ISS, ISS Visibility does a great job of listing upcoming flyovers, and provides both a small and large sky chart (planisphere) with times marked across the sky.

Sputnik provides a compass/device orientation and shows both ISS and Iridium flares. (It's a hidden function under the curved arrow, send e-mail icon at the top.)

In any event, I agree with Tom's point-- good to support the app and Southern Stars in general! And, as with all their apps, they seem to evolve and improve right before one's very eyes!

The chronological list of upcoming satellite events (rises, transits, etc) is (hopefully) coming in the next version. Have no fear.

Yes, there is a alert system to display an alert when a particular event is about to occur.

Although I don't observe satellites specifically, I do enjoy IDing the ones I come across in my viewing sessions. As an afficianado and supporter of SkySafari Pro, I purchased Satellite Safari today. Very nice app, and only version 1.0. I can hardly imagine all of the goodies Southern Stars will add with subsequent updates.

I would love to see the ability to add custom panoramic landscapes ala SkySafari!

Starmap Pro and Satellites-- tres impressive! new [Re: LivingNDixie]

Turns out that Starmap Pro has a pretty incredible built-in satellite feature, too. I've started another thread on that, so that this one can remain focused on Satellite Safari.

Could you explain what you mean by smoother movement? Do you want the screen updated more than once a second?

The sight circle, if I understand what you mean, is in the Ground View. It shows the area on Earth where the satellite is visible.

We will be releasing version 1.1 in a week or two. It will have many major improvements.

I downloaded it this evening... I am not much on satellites but that might change with a easy way to identify them.

Jon

Jon,

I know what you mean. I was not much of a satellite observer myself until writing this app. Now I find myself using the early evening hours spotting a few satellites for fun. There is something very satisfying about seeing a satellite pass right where it is predicted.

You'll also find a pair of binoculars will help you locate quite a few more satellites than you will see naked eye.

Satellite Safari has been very stable on my iPhone 5 and iPad 3, Ive been trying to crash it, I basically threw the book at it and nothing, the app runs great.

Kurat,

Glad it has been working well for you. Not sure what to think about your statement the you've "been trying to crash it" .

FYI: we just submitted version 1.1 for iOS to Apple last night. It will probably take a week or so to go through the approval process.
