Cretaceous redux: the T-Rex arrives...
      #5759012 - 03/26/13 08:02 PM Attachment (68 downloads)

The T-Rex Apex arrived from Ed Thomas at Deep Space Products (thanks Ed ), and it looks great! The head mounted easily on a Losmandy HD tripod by way of an Optical Supports adapter, the whole rig with a loaded TEC 140 on board is rock steady. I was not really looking forward to working two slow motion controls all night, but they are silky smooth and easy on the hands. Nevertheless, I will certainly add motors to the controls at some point. For push to simplicity I chose the Sky Commander and am still learning how to use it. Saturday promises to be nice, so I hope to get some outdoor time for a First Light. I'll start with the TEC 140 and cycle through my other scopes to see how they each work on the new mount, more pix and a review will follow. Once the weather improves enough I'll break out the Atlas AZ Pro and do a side-by-side comparison...

Clear Skies,
Brian

Congrats....I'd love to see one of those in action. I have wondered about the slow motion controls and what they are like in use. Looks great!

I should have my new white one in about a week, you're welcome to drop over and try it.

(You have to pay your own airfares though )

That is a very impressive setup Brian, congratulations. I have yet to decide on the tripod for mine, considering the Berlebach Planet.

Nice rig...is that handle OEM or aftermarket? The best I've seen.

Thanks gang! I am very pleased at how smooth everything moves and how quickly vibrations dampen out.
t.r. - that is the handle DSP offers for the T-Rex, it's very nice indeed
Still waiting for that patch of open sky...

Clear Skies,
Brian

I'd be careful of such invitations, unless of course you like house guests.

I have a Planet. You cannot go wrong, it's very stable and looks great on top of that. Something about a quality wood tripod.....my wife even approved enough for it to be left set up in the den.

After I got my TRex with Sky Commander I was having problems trying to figure out the best way to align with only 2 stars. Then I read about an app for the iPad called Alt Az Align, works great to help you pick out the best pairs of stars. Probably works on other tablets too.

It is not necessary to replace the tripod on the T-Rex.

The tripod (Atlas/CGEM type) that comes with this mount allows it to hold a C11 or a 6" F5.9 Refractor completely steady. Plus that tripod can stay attached to the mount and still fits perfectly into the carrying bag they give you with the mount. If you plan to travel with the mount as I do, that bag is really nice. I could be wrong but I doubt the planet will fit in that bag while attached to the mount. You can also buy the Atlas Pier Extension for this tripod in case you have a long refractor you want to use on the mount.

Here's the link to the ap. Searching for "Alt Az Align" won't find it, according to the author in this thread.

Thanks Lane , I ordered the mount head only (tripod is optional here) as I am making an aluminium pier but thought I would later get a tripod as well.

I take it the skies over Northern Virginia are still clouded over in retaliation to your purchase of the TRex, still waiting for your 'first light' report Brian.
I now have had a few hours of clear skies, although old Luna is out trying to spoil the fun.
The T-Rex is proving to be worth every cent of its formidable price. The T-Rex and the TSA are my new best friends. I think we'll be together for a very long time.
