A few moldy oldies from the archives new
      #5757174 - 03/25/13 10:48 PM

All completely hand guided using a homemade piggy back adapter on an cheap 4.25" reflector. A couple of pieces of my hair, taped across the bottom of the barrel of my eyepiece and defocused to the point I could see them and keep the cross hairs centered on the OOF silhouette of my diagonal was as high tech as I had back in the day.

Comet Bennett, 1970 10 mins on Tri-X, 50 mm, f3.5

Comet Abe, 1970 10 mins on Tri X, 50 mm, f3.5

And a more "recent" image, Comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock "in color" on the old Kodak VR 1000. 50 mm, f 3.5

Even though this is just a 5 min exposure, the comet was so close it shows a large amount of travel

This is great stuff and I appreciate the efforts it took to accomplish these frames. Thank you for posting these treasures. If you have more - please ...

A wonderful contribution to the forum. I missed Comet IRAS as it was cloudy the whole time of its apparition! I remember the photos well. It was a fast mover!

Post more if you got 'em.

As you asked.

Another photo of IRAS, this with an ancient POS 300mm lens, f4, 5 mins, on Kodak VR 1000 film. (The lens was never properly stopped for infinity focus, I was able to correct it after seeing many results like this and disassembling the lens to resetting the limit stops, but what do you expect from a $ 200 lens ?)

You can get a better idea of how fast this thing was moving here.

But back to the archives, here's Comet Tago-Sato-Kosaka (1969) on Tri-X Pan, 50 mm lens, f3.5 on the old Nikon rangefinder

And here's the "Big Kahuna", Halley itself.

5 min exp. on Kodak VR 1000, taken on a "Hiss Mount". Anyone remember them ?

Here's the morning after photo showing the menagerie of scopes/tripods shot with the same VR 1000 film. The 4.5 reflector is sitting on the hiss mount and my original build around my 17.5" mirror is in the big yellow tube.
