Jupiter: A Gas Giant new
      #571073 - 08/23/05 05:31 PM Attachment (86 downloads)

Here's my first attempt at Jupiter - the colours are by no means spot on but i'm pleased with it after hours of work!

Enjoy and any comments would be appreciated.

Quite nice! A few suggestions:

- Here and there, one can see the effects of what I am guessing is the program's "wave function" that makes the bands have little waves in them. Some of them repeat at very regular intervals - this is most noticeable in the band that is right above the Red Spot. This may not be noticed with smaller images, and some brushwork would get rid of them.

- Mastering planetary phases: One key point to remember is that a cresent phase, even at the poles, can never go more than halfway around the planet (except under strange circumstances, like eclipses or illumination from multiple light sources). So, in a standard situation with a planet and directional light, no part of the illuminated cresent should go past the centerline of the planet. Similarly, when in a gibbous phase, the dark part (which is essentially a dark cresent) cannot go past the centerline of the planet.

Hope this helps!

Tnak you for your suggestions Matthew - i had a real problem brushing out the layers - every time i did so, i got undesired areas of bright and dark colour, and distortion of the image. I went to "Filter - Liquify" and playes around in there for a while, and i just couldn't get rid of many of the waves without badly distorting the image. Is there a better way to get rid of the obvious waves?

Thanks and Clear Skies

It is not easy, though a light touch of the Smudge tool may work.

Here's my effort with the smudge tool - thanks very much for telling me about it, i would never have found it otherwise, it seems to have done the trick! Not sure if it's half the planet though...

I'm also not too happy with the colours, but to be honest i don't fancy doing the whole thing again!

See - it works wonders!

For best effect, smudge the texture layer and then apply the shadow layer after you are done smudging. That way, you don't risk smudging the shadow. For example, near the dark part of the planet limb, you can see that the shadow got smudged and crossed over the edge of the planet.

When in doubt, create extra layers. You can always get rid of them later.

Cheers Matthew for the advice, i'll try and do another Jupiter, but not for a few days as i'm a bit tired of it now, i want to try and do a fresh piece.

Are you currently working on any astroarts? I hope so as i like your work.
