Frankly, the quality of these mounts are so much better than any of the ETX line (and a lot of other scopes in the Meade line). Even the classic LX200 didn't have drives of this quality. Certainly the mount is stiffer than the similar Celestron SE models.

Gday George

Gotta agree with the drive gear quality, which is why i cant understand them not using something similar in the LX80s.
However, i have found the DEC axle to be a weak point for stability, due to the short bearing spacing, and non rigid outer mounting.
Ie when i reverse direction in Alt, i get horizontal image shift.
Certainly not critical for visual but it does indicate the axis isnt as solid as it could be.
I note your DEC assy is slightly different to mine, so it may have been stiffened up later.
The RA axle is solid as a rock

I've got a dead LX50 fork. Looks like these 4.5" gears will fit in the Dec fork hub. However, Meade hasn't provided a Polar position option yet and I'm not sure how much you can do with custom rate in the setup menu. So do I get an LX600 if I put the LS8 tube on the LX50 mount? Cheers.

Gday George

Not quite.
The LS firmware cant autoguide via its camera
( that i know of ).
However, the LS does have a polar align option ( 1 or 2 star )
but ive never tried it as the mount wasnt solid enough in the DEC axle, and i dont know how to put it in Polar home without clutches.
I should really go and play with those options.

Just tried indoors and the polar aligning options do appear to work, but its up to you to centre the stars.
Dont understand why the camera couldnt do the star centring if reqd???
No idea how good the real alignment model or pointing is,
as i cant see the sky at present,
but a few test slews appeared to get in the ballpark region of expected.

Thanks, George! Do the plastic covers come off easily, or are there any pitfalls? I don't want to break or crack anything and that large nut on my azim drive gear needs to be tightened - my scope flops left-right in azim even when tightly bolted to the tripod.

Not really. Once the mainboard screws are out it takes a little fiddling to get it off as the connectors protrude through it. don't miss the four screws at the bottom of the Alt cover. The ones in the grip recess have to be removed the other looong ones only have to be loosened.

As mounts go this is fairly easy to open up for work. I was working on a Nexstar 5 yesterday that needed a battery holder replaced. I almost had to completely tear it down to do it as the cover won't come off without removing the Alt arm. Then I tested it after having almost getting it together and I had to tear it down even more extensively to replace a bad hand control jack, sigh...
