Carrying Handles for SCTs and RCs
      #5765881 - 03/29/13 10:43 PM

I was going to post this in the DIY forum, but thought it might be more useful and get more views here, moderators feel free to move if needed.

This past winter, after many close calls when trying to mount the AT10RC on the saddle, I decided to fix the situation. I use ADM MDS bars on my RCs to mount the guiders, so it was a simple fix to find a handle and mount it to the ADM adapters to allow carrying and mounting the OTA easily.

This has eliminated all the anxiety on those frigid nights when setting up with cold fingers and a slippery OTA tube, a recipe for pending disaster for sure. So, if you don't have the luxury of an semi-warm observatory and a permanent pier, this might be the answer for you?

All the details are on the Flickr link, along with 2 other images.

Hope it helps someone as much as it has me...

Paul

That is a very sturdy and secure solution. For those without a guide scope rail, a custom Scope Tote from Astronomy Shoppe for $40 works well for my 8" SCT.

I was thinking of some handles, but the idea of mounting them on the DT bar is superb. even with a handle on the rear cell I don't feel that secure. Yours are rigid, easy to balance and remove when you've safely landed. You can even check how secure the scope is before letting go. Thanks for sharing.

I was searching CN for ideas this morning. This is what I came up with; it still needs some refining of the final shape but it is an improvement over grabing the scope by the diagonal or the finder scope.
