What mount do you use for solar? new
      #5749290 - 03/22/13 09:37 AM

Hi - I have a cheap little mount I use for my Lunt 60DS, but I was looking to get one that tracks. But can you align an equatorial (or GOTO) telescope during the day, good enough that it tracks the sun reasonably well? If so, what mount do you use? Any insight you all can provide will be greatly appreciated. I was hoping for something light, a grab and go mounts. Thanks!

The Skywatcher HEQ 5 Pro works fine for me, excellent tracking, can support both Lunt 60 and Lunt 102 side by side.

I'm using a CGEM. Get it pointed roughly north with the correct latitude set and it tracks fairly well. Usually able to put the sun very close to the center of my Sol Searcher on the first slew. Just do a solar system align on the sun. Works great.

I usually use an LXD 75 for my Solarmax 60 , it is a bit lighter than my HEQ5 Pro . I just aim the mount north using a compass then I skip the alignment process and manually position it to the sun .As long as the mount is level it will track well .

Ok, thanks everyone. So it sounds like it would be worth it to give it a try. I was thinking of trying the Ioptron SmartEQ since it's light but looks like the capacity would still be sufficient for the Lunt60.

Most of the Lunt 60's in our club use the Celestron CG-5. It's strong enough to drive a "Quad" stacked 60.

I use a iOptron Cube mount for my both the Lunt OTA's I have (35 and 60mm). Turn the mount on, set it to track the sun, align the head with the Sol searcher and its good for hours.

Classic8,
I haven't gotten mine yet, being shipped TODAY! but I'll be mounting it on my HGM-200, in between a C6R & 10"f4SNT.

Atlas EQ-G...kind of portable but rock solid in a breeze!

I use the iOptron SmartEQ for my PST. No issues at all. I just point to north with a compass, estimate my local deviation, and turn it on. Slew to the sun, sync target, and no further fuss. Can be setup up and viewing in a couple minutes. I have no doubt it will handle the Lunt 60 with ease.

I've just last week started to use the Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ6 GT for solar. I like the way an alt-azimuth mount keeps the eyepiece at about the same level no matter where in the sky it's pointing. This makes viewing more comfortable.

Here's a nice pic of the AZ-EQ6 being used for solar outreach:

That's an awesome solar outreach setup frilinmod!

I'm still looking into either a mini tower , lx80, or twilight II myself.

Here's what works for me. Lightweight and simple to set up! In the field I power it with a 'jumpstart' battery.

Very impressive setup. I would like both my solar scopes installed like this...

My mount is a SW EQ3-2 atop a fourteen foot pier to get a view over the surrounding greenery in winter . . .
