Yep. Unfortunately, I've yet to take a really good picture that does justice to the Stardust Blue finish. It's really a little bit darker than the photo above portrays, and it's got lots of sparkled highlights that look really pretty in the light. Of course none of that really matters in the dark, lol.

Yeah, that's a pretty good representation, Scott. You've got to get the lighting just right to bring out the "stardust" highlights in a photo.

Well, I got at least one fish to bite the April Fool's hook (and I think I used this same picture last year). The guy in the photo with the scope is actually about 6'2", so it shows just how things can be manipulated.

Here is a photo not doctored. GOTO ED 125mm f/8 (very rare) on a Takahashi EM10 mount. I borrowed the scope for an extended period, and unfortunately it was heavy for it's size and not very good. Focuser was very crude by today's standard.

Just curious.....does anyone here do a "copy and save" of some of the pictures here and save them in a "CloudyNights Refractor" file on their computer?

I will confess to being guilty of doing that - kind of like collecting baseball cards.

So many sweet scopes!

Here is my newest scope.

It's an old 135 f/l camera lens converted into a scope of sorts. Got the idea from someone over in the ATM forum. It works great with a few my eyepieces. I took a look at M42 and looked pretty good for something held together with electrical tape.

Another picture. Currently it works with 5 my eyepieces and barlow. Giving me a magnification range of 4.2x-18x. And a TFOV range of 12.3 degrees to 1.7 degrees.

A couple of my "pea shooters"...

60mm f/16.7 Carton achromat on Lapides-modified Takahashi Teegul alt-az mount and Bogen tripod.

Astro-Tech AT60EDT 60mm f/6 triplet on the same mount.

Two points: first, both of these instruments are being used in a 12-month observing challenge, the details of which should appear here on CN in an article I've submitted setting out the rules and purpose of the challenge, and second, each of these has better color correction than JeffB's scope (scroll up in the thread), so there!

Keep your eyes peeled in the coming months for "The 60mm Year-Long Telescope Challenge" article here on CN. Perhaps some of you will be man (or woman) enough to accept the challenge and participate.

Regards,

Jim

Its at the upper end of what I'd be comfortable with. The FLT is pretty heavy for its size, not sure exactly but I'd say about 15 lbs.

Yeah, I know. And I have an RDF on the way that I'll put on the one on the right.

I still need to align the two saddles to one another, too, but it should be pretty nifty to go from a zero-mag finder to the 5.5 degree 10x AT60EDT over to the higher mag long focus OTA in progression from left to right (just like reading).

Regards,

Jim

No criticism from me - I think it's rather cool. I've got a 50mm finder on my 80mm scope and a 60mm finder on my 102. Not that different. And they are both Stellarview finders so I can use other eyepieces easily too.

The wind is blowin and it clouded over, but I just got my $100pier! So its doll house time in between two of my other toys This could be the last 155 from the last production run, if not the last its close! The gods smiled and I got it from a local astronomer who owns several fine AP's and bought this after waiting many years as an investment. He waited for a local buyer so it would not be shipped and I was in the right place at the right time!!! Got the Feathertouch upgrade too

Headed out to JTree to see Panstarrs in the morning sky and it was really nice! This was my first dark sky with the 155 and wow did it perform! We had several campsite guests who said Saturn looked better in the 155 then the 18 inch dob next to me. I can't wait to get a binoviewer on it.

I believe you I had a 160 out last week with some friends and the view of Saturn looked like a stacked image but at the ep. Color surface detail contrast was absolutely breath taking.

nice pic Ron! I have been real happy with the Denk II.
I started with a WO bino, then the Televue binovue for a year and now I've had the Denk for a year. it's the best for the $$. I found a pair of the Denk 14mm EP's and they are great. along with a pair of panoptic 19's,
radian 10's and a pair of the Televue 8-24 zoom and I'm in bino heaven!

Thanks Ross,
I took all my camera gear with and ended up not taking a single astro photo last night. We had winds, many guests interested in the scopes and the sky and we played host till 1am with all these people, slept for a few and got up to see Panstarrs. It would be fun to get a bunch of CA AP owners together for a star party somewhere in the future.

2) How deep is that threaded portion between the lens engraving ring and the glass? It looks gigantic. I realize there is huge perspective distortion in the pic. Would love to see more pics of this lens from different angles.

Nice, I have to admit to a little envy and went to the AP site to see how much it weighed compared to 155. 42lbs or about 20lbs more!
Well that took the wind out of my sails as I don't have an observatory.
6" is about the limit for me to transport a scope plus everything
else.
Many nice nights with your new tube.

For the 175, there were many varying wait times. At NEAF 2012, there were a few that got on the list, along with those on the old 180 list from as long ago as 14 years. Then there were 11 lottery winners of which a few were and had been on the 155 list for quite a few years. The remaining 5 scopes were offered to the 155 list folks and the last I heard was that list was dated from 1999.

I was on the old list from the Mid Ninties I really did not expect Roland to do anything with the extra Glass he had squireled away. But glad he did. With the newer coatings used on the 175 deep sky objects present a really nice appearance and the planets of course in good seeing are simply fantastic. BTW Joe what is the SN on your lense.

I got on the large refractor list in 1996. I foolishly passed up an open spot on the 180 f7 production run, never expected AP to make a 7" again.

Another Sears 6339-A. This one is in excellent shape with all of the accessories. Did a bit of lunar viewing last night with this Sears scope, an Optica b/c 76/1200 and a Celestron ED100. Both 76mm scopes gave views that were every bit as good as the ED100. I was using the same eyepieces on all of the scopes (some .965 Antares Plossls which work very, very well at f/16).

Hi All,

Just back from NEAF. Picked up a ES127mm for a quick grab and go visual scope. The CF tube really helps cut the weight which I was slightly concerned with as I wanted to mount it on my Stellarvue Alt/Az mount. It works very well. Tested it on a couple doubles tonight thru the clouds and shows very nice views.

I checked out AP's 1100GTO at NEAF last weekend. It is a scaled-down version of the 1600GTO, which I have (it's quite robust and tracks exceptionally well w/low PE). The 1100 is well worth the introductory price of $8.8K.

Beautiful. Oil spaced?

This objective looks different than other A-P objectives I've seen. I see the little round white circular "patches" along the edge of the lens similar to those on a TEC oil spaced lens.

You can see the "patches" I'm talking about on this TEC objective, too.

I've got those same "patches" on my AP175EDF and it's air spaced. Not sure what they do or why they are there.....must be part of the special magic applied during the creation process.

I painted my Tak FS128 cell black too.. (and baked it) but then went the additional step of tapping it for TMB130/6 lens pattern : )
It simply unscrews from the tube and the lens comes right off it with three fasteners. You can see a disassembled FS128 here: http://www.pbase.com/mclemens1969/tmb130_construction
If I were to do it again, I'd bring the cell to a powder coater.

David,
My Tak was owned by a fairly well know amature astronomer/scope builder that paints all his scopes red. As mine had some scratches, I repainted the ota back to a Tak white. The counter cell was done in black ( I used an automotive acrylic lacqure) to match the soon to be added (whenever Starlight finishes making it) FT 3035 focuser. To paint it , one just unscrews the counter cell after removinfg the small set screw in it, and then three screws remove the lens assembly from the counter cell and you can paint it. More pics when the new focuser is ready.

Hi Mike,

Congratulations for the new acquisition...!!!
May I ask what is the modification you made to the brake of the 200ED focuser...?!

Cheers,
-- Max

PS/ As per your dilemma, I spent myself quite a long time with the 200ED and the 180EDT side-by-side to assess which one to keep...
A few months later... I ended up getting a second mount
Beware...

Congratulations Mike. They both are truly keepers!

Per Roland, the theoretical resolving limit is .6 arc seconds. Not true.

I just got back from the Texas Star Party where on one specific night I was able to resolve the Cassini division at .65 arc seconds. Later that night I went back to Saturn and to my surprise, the seeing conditions supported the best view I have seen outside of a picture. I, along with several others, were able to resolve Enckes division at .35 arc seconds and see shadowing on the planet from the rings at about 300X.

The 175 will exceed your expectations in every way.

I would not want to be in your shoes with having to decide which one to keep.

Best wishes!

Joe

Amazing pair of refractors Mike. I can think of dozens of reasons to keep each... Both are once in a lifetime scopes, both have perfect optics and mechanics, both are made by artists whom you can actually call and speak to. For me it would come down to whether or not you use your telescope away from home or not- not sure I'd be willing to give up that aperture though. Have you been able to use them side by side? What a fun yet miserable decision to make.

No, they always converge at the base of the mounting plate and run in one nice braided sleeve off the mount. 10Micron doesn't offer through-mount cabling (not that I'd ever needed it).

I am a cabling fetishist

I just posted this pic in the Classics forum, these three scopes define premium optics during their eras. Pretty impressive to see what technology has done for focal length and ease of use over the years:

75mm Unitron
1996 FS 102 (I much prefer the green trim over the blue)
Current release AP 130 EDFGT, the only telescope I've purchased new

I've been comparing the two mono and binoviewing on the moon, planets, and deep sky, so far I've not found any difference in visual use. Not surprising I guess, given the superb interferometer reports Roland posted on the 130 EDF. My final choice is likely to come down to ergonomics. I have a very soft spot for the 130 EDF, the perfect balance between aperture and portability, and it's a little faster than the GT. The GT's ability to break down into three subunits for airline travel isn't a benefit for me, just an opportunity to get dust inside the ota, but I do like its rotatable focuser. Still haven't decided which to keep.

"Home brew alt-az mount" does not do that mount justice Ed! That is superb craftsmanship, and it looks great. How smooth is the panning, and do you have any issues balancing the AT72 on it?

I went through the same EDF vs. GT decision making process. I don't do any astrophotography and could find no difference in visual performance between the two scopes other than that I very slightly preferred the EDF on the Moon for some reason. I also preferred the looks and more classic styling of the EDF as well as its lighter weight. I have no need for the modular design of the GT and use an alt/az mount so the rotating focuser wasn't a factor. I sold the more pricey GT and have had absolutely no regrets.

And I must say that ALL of the photos of refractors are gorgeous...literally all of them.

I have to say that I am really partial to the TMB 130SS with the original focuser. I wish I had one. Hang on to that one Steve.

Here are two of mine from 8 years ago. The larger scope is the Vernonscope Brandon 94 mm, approx. f/7 featuring an AP triplet cemented objective and Unitron tube components (objective cell and focuser). The smaller scope is a University Optics "kit" 80 mm f/6.25 achromat. It is painted with Rustoleum "Harbor Blue" which is close in color to "Brandon Blue". Note that the University Optics focuser uses identical focuser knobs to the Unitron focuser on the Brandon.

I no longer have the Brandon, but the University Optics scope is my dedicated solar scope with a Coronado 60 h-alpha filter. It is also now fitted with a FeatherTouch focuser.

Scott, Ian, thanks for the compliments. The mount is garbage - I made it all from salvaged wood and hardware. I use milk jug material for the bearing/moving surfaces and designed a mechanism for the elevation that has adjustable pre-load, and the aluminum knob is a clutch mechanism to lock it in place. I have four mounting positions to balance the scope fore and aft. It works smoothly and does a nice job with either my binoviewer or single eyepieces.

The solar shield is just a sheet of white Evergreen modeling sheet available in different thicknesses from most good hobby shops. Attached via a binocular holder mounted to a Unitron Uniclamp with camera bracket.

Binojunky,

No, not a Mont Blanc, just a cheap look-alike. Wish it was real. I always wanted to own one. Thanks for the compliment.

Hi Mike!

The mount I purchased for my Halley is the former version of Vixen GP2 Photo Guider (http://www.vixenoptics.com/mounts/gp2photo.html). At the time I bought my Halley new, I was thinking about getting the Vixen Super Polaris mount but it was too big for my refractor. So, that one seemed to fit my needs better.
As for the Mak, I don't think it was made available on the American market (but I may be wrong). The instrument was made in Japan and released here in Europe under several brands, Paralux being just one of them. It's been a p.. in the B.. to find one on the used market but, lucky was I and got it in a like brand new state for just ... 50 Euros ($ 65)! Only another one is still available here but at a collector price (300 euros which is insane).

I am glad to see that these 2 scopes are appreciated!

Such a nice little scope, Doug. And that finder is totally space age terminator looking. Do you know what the largest field possible is with a TV widefield eyepiece?
