Jupiter and it's moons go dancing Tuesday April 2
      #5769523 - 03/31/13 07:21 PM

Tuesday April 2, Jupiter and it's moons will be dancing. All times are in Mountain Standard Time (Arizona) so adjust accordingly to your time zone.

07:40 Pm Io goes behind Jupiter
08:03 Pm Europa goes in front of Jupiter
09:01 Pm Ganymede goes behind Jupiter
10:17 Pm Europa's shadow falls on Jupiter near the GRS
10:31 Pm Europa moves from in front of Jupiter
11:00 Pm Io emerges from Jupiter's shadow
11:27 Pm Ganymede emerges from Jupiter's shadow
11:34 Pm Jupiter sets

We probably won't see this transition again for a while.
David

Thanks David, I'll send on prayer aloft for good skies and catch a piece of this action. I love when a shadow and GRS are simultaneously visible.

Tonight's (and every night's) display is illustrated at 1.5-hour intervals on my Jupiter webpage www.CurtRenz.com/jupiter in the link toward the bottom for "Galilean Satellite Nightly Array".

One down, two to go. Io is now behind Jupiter. Only three of the satellites are visible, as viewed through the ASH 17" f/15 classical Cassegrain at 162x.

Two down, one to go. Europa is now transiting Jupiter. Only two of the Galilean satellites are visible.

Jupiter is fairly low in the sky at my location at this time and is boiling quite a bit so I stopped the 17" down to 14" after posting my first message.

It's a beautiful sight out there. Seeing was as good as it gets from home tonight. Split Rigel and got the pup (Siriusly!)and the Trapezium e while watching the action around Jupiter. The 8SE was performing flawlessly with the Goto for shuttling around with my 6.7mm EP. Had a peak at some Ms and the Crab nebula with 20mm. So now I am back inside thawing out. What a great night! Sure made up for no Panstaars...
And thanks for the heads up on the Jovian show.

Well, I almost saw Ganymede being occulted. The seeing and atmospheric prismatic dispersion were so bad that I couldn't distinguish Ganymede as it rounded Jupiter's limb.

Thanks for all the play-by-plays. I got clouded out of this one. I've had a great time with Jove over the last 7 months, but it's getting too low by sunset for me.

Agreed - thank you Dave! Wasn't able to get out last night, and this is close as I get to finding out how it looked.
