So, a "TLP" caught on "dead" Mercury?
      #5770615 - 04/01/13 11:49 AM

Makes me wonder if lunar TLPs are just another reality just waiting for a good photocatch...

http://messenger.jhuapl.edu/gallery/sciencePhotos/image.php?gallery_id=2&...

I know that the hypothesized mechanisms for this happening on Mercury don't necessarily translate to the Moon but still...interesting how reality evolves with time...as Mercury was once thought (very recently & post Messenger too) to be currently geologically as dead as the Moon.

I wonder also if the form of the plume supports an impactor scenario? The article didn't indicate a duration for either the event or the period of observation...

Well look at it this way - they found ice recently - so its still got surprises.
If they call that humor though -

Pete

Read the third sentence from the bottom of the article.

I see that now. Mea culpa. *But*-- the whole last paragraph and the "PS" were added later in the day. I read the original version right through and the sole ref to april fools was simply the date of the article at the top. Honestly...i'm beginning to think it is a good policy (for humorless me at least) to just disregard _anything_ published on that date in the future.

The Messenger team has done this since it's been in orbit:

Encounter with the Ancient Mariner

Mooning Mercury

They're well done -- you gotta give 'em that. You had to read the last one very closely in order to catch on.
