Vixen Porta II #38012 adapater plate??
      #5771074 - 04/01/13 04:12 PM

Wopuld this be the correct adapter to use a regular 3/8" bolt tripod? I am assuming it is, but cannot find any specs online to confirm this.

Many thanks in advance.

It says it's supplied with the Porta II mount. The one that came with my Porta II is 10mm.

For my Original Porta, I have Vixen's #3942 adapter that converts it to 1/4" thread, followed by a Manfrotto #120 3/8" to 1/4" adapter. Not the most cost effective, but it works

fwiw, according to Vixen's Porta Accy' page, #3942 is used by both original Porta and Porta II for 1/4" mounting.

I was just about to say the same - except you could drill & tap the center for 3/8-16 thread and skip the adapter

After just coming home with some 10MM bolts for another one of my Porta projects, none will thread into my Porta II.
So what pitch are the 10MM bolts would be the next question???
Silly me forgot to check the bolt boxes for that info and left the mount home so I was not able to cross fit/check.

I will answer my own question here as to what size the Porta bolt is,,,
It is 10 mm with a 1.50 pitch.
According to Home Depot handy dandy thread checker I had the Porta bolt with me to check.
In 10mm there are 3 different thread pitches.
What really grinds me is the 6- 10mm bolts I bought yesterday would not thread into my Porta, so after checking the Porta's against the thread checker I was really curious to see what the pitch was on the 6 bolts I bought yesterday.
The grinding part coming here,,, all 6 bolts according to Ace's handy dandy thread checker were all 1.50 pitch so I have no idea what gives here with me, must not have been holding my mouth right when checking the 6 new bolts.

Metric threads do have some 'standard' sizes. You will also see that there is a course, fine and very fine thread too. In my business the std sizes were

6mm x 1.00
8mm x 1.25
10mm x 1.50
12mm x 1.75
14mm x 2.00

These are just the most common sizes you will find, but beware of the other thread pitches as well

6mm x .5
6mm x .75
8mm x .5
8mm x .75
8mm x 1.00
10mm x .75
10mm x 1.00
10mm x 1.25
12mm x .75
12mm x 1.00
12mm x 1.25
14mm x 1.00
14mm x 1.25
14mm x 1.75

And that's just a few of the popular sizes

Thanks for the helpful replies. I am considering the Oberwerks tripod. I spoke with someone from there and he told me this conversion can be done. Whatever happens, something will need to be drilled out and re-threaded.

I was hoping to hear from someone who has done such a conversion.

I'm in the process of doing a conversion to get the Porta to fit the Oberwerk.
I have done this before and fine tuning my conversion
It's not as hard as most make it out to be.
So far the hardest part was finding the right bolt, but the one I wound up needing comes with the PortaII.
So what has to be drilled out and re-threaded?
