Bart, sorry it took a month to reply! You can order the Explora Dome with an Aluminum ring that the dome rides on. One of the complaints of the ED system is the imperfections of how circular they are, ie they're not perfectly round. PolyDome came up with the aluminum ring to fix the issue. My dome turns fine, I needed to trim here and there to keep the dome retaining ring from rubbing while turning. I'm planning on remoting my setup and now see that having a dome with tighter tolerances would be better in the long haul. I operate in temps down to -10F and figure that I need the best setup I can get. I will say that I'm now able to remotely turn the dome with no problem, but the dome does tend to "wobble" as it's turning. I'm overall very happy with it!

Larry

So I am new on Cloudy Nights. Here is my remote observatory located in east of Benson, AZ. Construction photos can be seen on my website.

Dean,

Beautiful observatory. I noticed that your thermometer says 80 degrees. Sounds so nice.

And welcome to Cloudy Nights.

Best, Linda B.

Thanks for your kind words Terry! Your 12'er is gorgeous. I considered the "barn door" style opening for POD MAX too.

Fiberglass is beautiful, but as you wrote, expensive.

S.montanaro, I see you have added an additional "rubber" seal element on-top of the rotation guard. Could you please give us some details as to where you obtained it?

Megabusa, that is an awesome observatory! My homeowners association would not allow me to build something that close to the property line. I,m thinking of putting a peir out in the middle of my yard. Enjoy that observatory.

Very nice Steve. Quite elegant out there in that open lawn. BTW, the BBCode link requires [img] instead of [image]. A bit of a bug in the forum, although I think the latter used to work.

Beo

Here is a photo of where my observatory is located.

The U shaper structure is my raised garden bed and the shelter for the scope and mount is left and above that

Those are branches and small shrubs located on the edge of the cliff where I took the photo from.

The house is near The Chief. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stawamus_Chief

I couldn't find a carpenter after the flood so I had to build it by myself.

Google Earth - I built the 8x8 deck add-on last year and bought the Homedome 6' in Ohio last week. Still, it took 7 days of hard work to rip out the old and add the new.

It helped that a 20' 4x4 came to rest in my front yard after the flood. That deck was only 12" above the river's crest of 34 ft. just 3 weeks ago.

Very nice job! It looks so well built in with the house & deck. I surely hope that the river doesn't rise higher in the future; that's scary! Nice that the river did leave you a gift, though!
