PST-just got Double Stack OMG!!! Best improvement. new
      #5771213 - 04/01/13 04:55 PM

The subject says it all. I observe with little PST all the time and take afocal shots with it aplenty. The afocal shots show much more contrast on the surface with all my post processing...
I decided to order the DS Filter from Telescopes.net to see if I could improve the view. I'd read quite a bit about it and it seemed that the reviews varied from somewhat improved to mostly worth the cost.
I had NO IDEA the improvement would be this much! Surface detail JUMPED into view - it's like my photoshopped shots BUT BETTER. Most of the detail I am seeing wasn't even visible before; it's like someone took one of jaw dropper shots we see and stuck it in my scope...
I've been observing for 40 years and besides my first view of Saturn, this is the most STUNNING view I've seen.
Wow.

Be careful - this can get quite expensive - so don't ever look through a larger H alpha scope/filter (especially DS'd) unless you're prepared to pay the price... On the other hand you'd never regret it.

Bob is right. I bought the LS80. Then the DSII the next day. A few days later I got the LS100 and DS. Now I want the LS152. Then take a look at this. Wow.

The LS152 is modular. You can do Ha, CaK, WL with a wedge or Baader filter and none of the above (night time, bird watching, whatever). That's quite handy.

This thread convinced me. I ordered the DS for my PST last night, while it's still on-sale.

A larger aperture H-a solar scope will have to wait for next solar max, if I'm still on this earth by then. I think the DS PST will do me just fine, in the meantime.

Hi Joe, sounds great, maybe my next purchase as I just got my PST and enjoying it.

Is there any of your afocal shots posted, as I would love to see them?

Thanks,

Bob

I'll post a few - they're not great... I've been an astrophotographer for many years, and am just starting to do afocal - out of necessity with the PST.

holy cow. DS unit cost more than my PST did. Thats ludicrous.

I recently started seeing more surface detail via binoviewers tho....

I think solar equipment is so pricey because the market is much, much smaller than that for traditional, night-time and sporting optics.

Did you have to up the mag to see the difference or was it apparent in all views. I noticed a bit more contrast but the seeing was not good enough to boost the power beyond a 14mm eyepiece.

My DS is enroute. Following it's movement online with tracking info sent by the seller.

Waiting is the hardest part.

Perfect, clear blue skies today. By the time it arrives, I have no doubt that it will be totally overcast and raining. Grumble.

I think the PST's etalon like my Lunt 60's is internal and smaller than the DS etalon. Etalons are expensive. I paid $1,250 for my scope and a 60mm DS etalon for it is $1,500. 90% of the time 70X> is used so I passed because the DS would have made the image too dim at those powers. David

Mine arrived today. I usually mount the PST on a GEM, but a tripod works well for low-power, quick views. Except of course it was too cloudy to use it! Clouds and rain forecast for the next four days. !%*@#!

Also the etalon cell blocks the sun finder, that was a surprise.

Which Coronado or Lunt do you all recommend for someone who wants to image with a DSLR, for under $2000?
