Selsi Model 247 80mm f/=910mm (APL) new

I was just wondering if the Selsi Model 247 made by APL are any good? Also would $336 shipped be a fair price? Thank you in advance for any information you can give!!

Yeah, Selsi scopes are generally pretty good, and my telescope built by APL in 1965 (not Selsi) has excellent optics. The one thing to consider is that at 80mm and F11, some color might creep in; I'd rather have an F15 for an 80mm older achromat with the older coatings. At $336 incl shipping it might be a tad on the expensive side. That would be offset a little by condition, incl. accessories, etc. Just my opinion.

CA does not bother me. Also I have a Baader semi-apo filter that works really well.

I think it would be a nice scope then. Can you get them to come down a bit? Say 300 shipped? Did you see this really nice Tasco 800x1200 for just under 200 right here on CN? (Nope, not me, nor do I know the seller).

I have a pair for Selsi refractors. One a 80mm f910mm and the other a 75mm f910. The 75 has excellent optics, the 80 not quite so.

See this thread in the archives: Selsi

If it is labeled APL I say yes. This one has excellent optics. Price would be fair if complete and in at least good condition.

Congratulations on the Tasco find! I think the Tasco 10K is a better scope, and will certainly have better color correction. I hope you'll post some pics after you get it.

The linked mount or this one? APL sourced optics versus Towa? I know which one I would rather have. As for CA you would have to compare them side by side, certainly not a certainty. Anyways I am sure the OP will enjoy their new scope.

My Mayflower APL (1965) has outstanding optics. I would rank it with any Unitron of similar 60mm aperture.

My first refractor back in 1974 was a Mayflower APL 60mm f/=910 on a Eq. mount. Wonderful scope wish I still had it!! I sold the scope to the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berserkly Ca. back in 1976.
