I really like the Marth crater in the Hippalus shot, is it a concentric crater or not I wonder??

Mike

Mike, these are stunning! The Hippalus image must become an Astronomy Picture of the Day.

What spacecraft did you travel on and how far above the moon's surface were you when you snapped these?

Thanks guys, Doug I've never sent anything to APOD, just to LPOD. I take it they also do lunar shots from time to time?

cheers

Mike

It is on Wood's 1971 list of concentric craters, but it may not be a concentric impact crater...Woods revisited this crater in april 2006 as the subject for two LPODS...I also checked Moon Morphology and Schultz considers concentric craters this size, in volcanic regions, as probably volcanic in origin (formed by separated dual eruptions with analogues here on Earth). Woods, in his April '06 LPODs, leaves the origin question of Marth unresolved.

Indeed, Mike. APOD publishes pictures of the moon. Check out January 4 and February 25 for recent lunar photos. I don't know how one submits a photo to APOD. And I likewise don't know how they could turn away your pic. It is, sir, that good.

Best of luck...

Doug
