Just an example of what changes over time
      #5780264 - 04/05/13 06:02 PM Attachment (88 downloads)

My initial design had a Cave mount (1.5 inch shafts) holding a ~20 pound Newtonian on a pedestal 36 inches tall. Even when I switched the Mount for an older Ap1200, this was SOLID.

Today I have a 48 inch pedestal, the AP1200, and about 95 pounds of scopes (3). I am just beginning to see a bit of torque, as shown by the scope "bounce" when making an adjustment with the hand pad.

The only point I'm making to anyone in the design phase is to consider your original scope MIGHT not be there 3-5-10 years down the road. An Observatory means you WILL spend more time observing, which sometimes leads to bigger scopes.

Plan accordingly.

This was the scope I designed for.

BTW, the pier is bolted to a "plug" of reinforced concrete measuring 18 inches in Diameter and 48 inches, into Caliche.

In typical human nature fashion you appear to have collected enough "stuff" to fill the available space.

Looks like you could use some spring cleaning in there! You've got a wonderful setup.

If I had known three years ago that today I'd be living in a (reasonably) dark-sky location and that I'd have an observatory, I would have parceled out my money differently, going for a bigger mount and a real imaging scope. I chose for portability and ease of set-up, which is no longer a concern. Alas, most of my money is gone

Reminds me of the inside of my Obs, it was all supposed to be minimalist and efficient. Yeah Right !!

I let that slip out one day when my wife and I were looking at Tool Chests. Nature hates a Vacuum and guys hate empty shelves.
