M81 and NGC 3077 First Try #5784840 - 04/07/13 09:38 PM Attachment (63 downloads)
The weather finally cleared up a bit last Wednesday, and I was finally able to get some galaxy shots. I tried to get M81 and M82 in the same field of view, but I must have moved M82 out of the field while trying to find a guidestar (and the brightest one I could find was so faint I could barely even see it!). I was pleasantly surprised to find NGC 3077 in the field of view. The spiral arms of M81 are much more apparent on the print than on this terrible scan. They show up more when I increase the contrast, but then the uneven fogging is also more apparent (I thought this problem was solved; it clearly isn't but I have backup plans). The exposure was about 7 minutes through my 6 inch refractor. I wanted to do some really long exposures with my red filter, but I was tired and had to study for the two tests I had in school the next day.
