New S&T Mars Topo Globe Coming!
      #5785664 - 04/08/13 11:04 AM

A couple of days ago, in the "S&T Topographic Moon Globe" thread, Sean (swalker) dropped this little bombshell:

Quote:

BTW, for globe fans, we are releasing an updated version of our previously discontinued Topographical Mars Globe, coming in a month or two.

I love working on these globes...

To me, this is big news and very welcome. I thought I'd give it its own thread so everyone is sure to see it! I wonder what the updates will be?

Thanks, Sean, and everyone else involved in bringing this back.

well I'll spoil the surprise and tell you the only additions are the positions of the recent mars missions (spirit, opportunity, phoenix, and curiosity) plus fix the few errors on the earlier one if there was any.
The proof we just got it looks much more vivid than the older version, I hope it translates that way to the final product.

Looks like I'll have to put in an EOY budget request / purchase for some new globes for my courses.

Sean, when is a Mercury Globe coming?

Cheers,

Jerry

Not for a while; we're still awaiting the final (actually first complete) map from the MESSENGER team. Then the fun starts.

Still hoping the approve my proposal for a crater name...

The Grad Students are working hard on finalizing the first-run images. Shouldn't be too long now.

A large bunch of proposals for crater names, I even submitted one, so that will take some time.

Now,... here's MY proposal to Sky & Telescope:

How about 4 rocky-planet globes, to size scale. Would make a great resource for classroom teaching. e.g. Mercury about 5 inches, Venus and Earth about 12 inches, and Mars about 7 inches. Run that past Bob.

Cheers,

Jerry

I'd rather not say Rick; but it's an American artist who came to prominence in the mid-20th century.

He already has a crater that bears his name on Mars. My proposal has nothing to do with astronomy.

I'll try that when I get the new Mars topo globe to compare with the new 3rd ed. regular Mars globe and an older one I have (which I don't know if it's a 2nd or 1st ed. Mars globe), plus the old moon globe I have (now I'm considering getting one of the new moon globes too) and the new topo moon globe and Venus globe -- I've gone globe-crazy!

There's a third edition? I was under the impression that the current Mars globe is the second edition (mainly because that's what the booklet that came with it said.)

Sean,
Next week - great! Will they be on the S&T web site right away? If so I'll keep my eye peeled and check every day.

PS: What a tease!
