Saturn April 6th 2013 new
      #5783104 - 04/07/13 04:41 AM Attachment (51 downloads)

Hi All,

Imaged Saturn this morning in variable seeing, from slowly waving like a flag to quite nice conditions.

Planned this mornings session around imaging the dark spot at L3 +46 degrees based on the WinJUPOS drift chart I created from the 4 data sets I have with this feature, dating back to Jan 23rd. The projected L3 proved quite accurate and I captured the dark spot this morning along with the large scale EZ feature I captured back on March 12th, best seen in the R channel data from this morning.

Thanks for looking

Regards
Trevor

Lovely smooth. I saw the body from gap!
You made the color look consistency each time.

I really like your colouring Trev. Such lovely smooth processing too. Not blotchy or with speckle.

Wonderfully done Trevor, I have a checklist that reflects the quality of a Saturn image captured above 50 degrees elevation. The list in order of increasing difficulty is that the image:

1. shows the Cassini Gap across the face of the planet
2. clearly shows the polar hexagon without the need for a
Polar Projection
3. shows Saturn's outline through the Cassini Gap
4. shows albedo signs reflecting presence of the Encke Gap

Looks like you met all 4 of those objectives so you've done an excellent job!

As to number 3 and number 4 I've only seen one image captured below 40 degrees elevation accomplish both of those objectives. It will be interesting to see if that changes between now and opposition on April 28. Just for fun Southern Hemisphere observers can play the game too, by recording an image at 35 degrees elevation between now and then

Pete

Thanks very much ZuoZhao, steadier seeing would have been nice but if I can resolve the features I am targeting I am reasonably happy. I must say that I admire also the smoothness of the processing with your Jupiter images.

Thanks very much Stuart.

Thanks very much John and I see the good seeing extended down to Melbourne, your Saturn is a ripper.

Thanks very much Paul, reckon that parked on the doorstep of Saturn it certainly wouldn't look blotchy or be covered with speckles so smooth but resolving the features I am after is my aim.

Thanks very much Pete, the high alt certainly helped. A combination of variable seeing and low alt really would be a challenge. With regards to imaging at down around the 30 degree alt mark, for a comparison, you could just look back through the forum to the images of Jupiter from OZ this last apparition.

Thanks very much Paul.

Thanks very much Graeme, looking at the very nice result of Johns from Melbourne, reckon Tassie should produce some nice data as well.

Thanks very much much Frank and what a good effort of yours for a low alt Saturn.

Thanks very much Paul, it also seems that your conditions continue to improve, hope that trend continues through to when you get the C 14 back.

Thanks very much Paul B.
