Timelapse - White Sands Star Party, Rio Rancho etc new
      #5786815 - 04/08/13 08:45 PM

Here it is. It took nearly 3000 subexposures just to get 2min 18 sec of video. I hope you enjoy it. I added quite a few effects and techniques.

https://vimeo.com/63616860/download?t=1365467876&v=156789221&s=6de765...

The link will prompt you to download the file. You can stream it or save it. It will play in your media player. It is 50MB in size so it may take a few seconds. (These are all unprocessed. What you see is what came out of the camera).

I had planned for other content on this one, but had a catastrophic DSLR failure combined with a cloud layer that snuck in from 11:30pm-3:30am during the star party. So unfortunately most of the material I have is out of the unmodded T3i. I have a few bits here and there from my modded T1i, and I'll post some stills in a moment.

Edit - a link to my flickr set with descriptions under each image.

Sorry to hear of the failure Josh, hope it wasn't 'terminal'. I like what you are up to with this ! Most imaging is 'static' and this I'd call more 'dynamic' and just as interesting though very different in subject and character.

Sorry guys, got distracted trying to upload images to flickr to share on here.

Long story short, I was at least smart enough to pack 2 DSLRs.. I believe after some triage that the camera itself may be just fine. But now I wish I had packed that third DSLR, but left it behind due to the amount of cargo we already had. For some reason, every time I pushed the T1i beyond the default 30 second exposure max it would generate a massive glow out of one side - I believe it has to be something the tablet software caused. I'll test on my laptop tonight to be certain. But it was not present shooting manually or less than 30 seconds. I swapped cameras and tablets and cables. It never manifested on the T3i, and the T1i repeated the issue on my 2nd tablet and every cable. As a result, I tossed a majority of my "deep sky - stacked" images. I had one or two that sort of came out ok as I was able to crop them somewhat due to the framing and eliminate the artifacts. Otherwise I would have had a tremendous amount of data to share. Oh well.. Things happen. Just glad I had some redundancy.

Added a link to the flickr set above in the first post. Still trying to salvage some of the deep sky data, but these were a few quick images ready to post.

My first attempt at the download timed out...trying again.

I've never encountered a problem like that. I use an external power supply most of the time.(Astronomiser Pro DC powered)

The T3i's use a different (lower) voltage battery that the T1i "I think". I can't swear to it, or that it would have something to do with it.

That's terrific Josh! I love the star trailing sequences, great job on the daylight sequence also!

Robert, here is a streaming version directly on Vimeo, but I strongly recommend the download if you can, because the compression involved in the streamed version seems to inject artifacts that seriously annoy me lol.

The cameras were both run off of their standard batteries - I added battery grip expanders to each and ran a stack of batteries so they'd last all night long. The tablets were simply used to drive the timelapse and long exposure acquisition, but the software I used is still beta form so it's quite possibly a glitch. I'll know for sure when I confirm using my laptop as I always have in the past. Odd that the T3i liked it just fine, but the T1i did not..

Thanks, Warren! I appreciate the feedback. I had a few lessons learned from this exercise so I hope to improve upon the next one, and include possibly a few new tricks.

Checking in from 40,000 ft, above southern AZ, working on the next time lapse! Too bad their wifi module blocks streaming...

Really sweet. I like the Trailing Milky Way about 80% through, and the ghost image of the guy looking at his scope at the end.
I see you got stuck with hot pixels in your timelapse too, I never figured out an easy way to get rid of them.
That's cool how the stars trail and then come back!

Thanks. The ghost is me, moving the camera that was sitting on the polarie. It was pointing at Orion until it set behind the dunes, then I had to retask the camera.

The star trails took a little bit of thinking. The technique is easy enough after you do it once, the sheer amount of processing is a pain. I finally scripted it and let it batch process through an afternoon. I believe I figured out a quick hot pixel removal method but need to test it out.

Thanks for the feedback. It was a lot of fun sorting this out. I learned a lot and hope to improve upon the next one.

Well, Robert, seems the catastrophic failure has to do either with the tablet software I was using, or the connectivity to the tablet, but only with the T1i. It works as normal when back on my laptop with Backyard EOS, or when firing stand-alone. The T3i, however, works perfectly on the tablet. Strange. Oh well, at least the camera isn't the issue. I was worried about that. It's been a great camera.
