Glint in Mark V with Leica ASPH Zooms new
      #5782071 - 04/06/13 03:41 PM

Hi:

I have been using my Leica ASPH Zooms in my Lunt LS100 solar scope and there is a glint that I think is coming from the Mark V.

I am using the 2.6X GPC and I have it installed like the 1.7X because I can’t think of a way to install it with the correct orientation in the Lunt diagonal.

I think the glint is coming from the Mark V because I can switch sides with each Leica and the glint is always on my right side. Then when I turn the bino around (upside down) the glint is then on my left side. No other eyepieces do this, however. I wonder if it is the length of the eyepiece being so tall or the zoom mechanisms inside. Or maybe my bino needs to be collimated??? Other eyepieces seem fine though.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this. I need to keep testing but was wondering if anyone else experienced something like this. I know there aren't too many people who bino the Leicas.

Thanks very much, Kent

I figured it out. In my Mark V binos on the right side if you take the eyepiece out you can see a large hole on the upper left inside where the eyepiece fits. Light is coming in here and because the 1.25" adapter to the Leica is very short it is reflecting inside. I think this would be the same for any eyepiece with a short adapter. It wouldn't be so noticeable in the dark but in the bright day it is very noticeable. Can anyone check to see if there is a hole in your Mark V on the right side. I am not sure why it is there actually. There isn't one on the left side. Thanks!

Here is a pic I found. I guess the hole should be there but you lose contrast with light getting in if the eyepiece doesn't extend past that hole.

I may have to get the Starlight 2" adapter and then this 1.25" to add on. I will have to be sure it is long enough so light doesn't come inside.

Scopestuff sells ( or did the last time I bought some) 1.25" eyepiece extensions in various lengths , IIRC like 7.5 mm, 10mm, 15mm etc.
perhaps one of those could extend your nosepiece enough?
Part numbers EPE3 , EPE5 and more on their site.

Rex. Thanks so much! The .475" one may be just about right.

I'll measure again to be sure and then I think I'll order a couple to try. Thanks again.

I added a 1.25" polarizer that I had lying around and I figure with the .475" extension the Leica will be just about 1mm too long. Not bad. I think that will work. The shorter one might be long enough to block the light too but they are out of stock.

I received my extensions today and only had a short viewing session of the sun but I think the extensions solved the problem. It is a lot better and usable now. When I have more time I will check things out a little closer. Thanks Rex!
