Low Profile Adapters for Unitron - Polarex new
      #5788846 - 04/09/13 06:12 PM Attachment (14 downloads)

Hello,
Just back from the Netherlands where I picked up a set of 5 different low profile adapters for my Polarex refractors.
The idea for the design was to put modern accessories on this classic scopes. The adapters are made from high quality aluminum and black anodized.

The adapters are for the two sizes draw tubes. The small ones that fit the smaller and the Deluxe Focusers and the large ones that fit the Super Focuser on the larger Unitron scopes.

The adapters needed to be low profile because you need a lot of in travel for the modern eyepieces.

There are to adapters for the small draw tubes. One for 1.25" accessories and on for T2 cameras and diagonals.

For the large draw tubes there are 3 adapters. For the 1.25" diagonals, the 2" diagonals and T2.

If possible they are threaded for filters.

Mechanically they fit perfect. Need to test them under the dark sky.

Xavier

The T2 adapter on the large draw tube holding a Canon dslr.
Can also be used with a webcam. Is threaded for filters or the AP Barcon.

Xavier

This is great. When you say "pick up", did you have them made? Can more be made? There was a question in the Yahoo Unitron group recently about this. At the moment, I am using the top part of an old barlow (which has a locking screw), sliding into the drawtube of my 75mm Polarex and using masking tape to be sure it wont fall off when using newer eyepieces or a webcam for solar and planetary imaging.

Roberto

Hi Roberto,

I designed the adapter and ordered them at a professional telescope maker in Holland.

Yes we can make more adapters. If there are enough orders (to reduce the price) we start a small production.

It would be a great solution for your problem.

Xavier

Xavier

I would be interested. There was a similar query raised at the Unitron Yahoo group as I mentioned above. Many members of this forum are also members of that group. Are you as well? I have had parts machined locally but I'm open to all options!

I'll post the adapters in the Yahoo group.

There are already 3 people who would like to order the small 1.25" adapter. We will start production if we have 10 orders.
Contact me if you're interested in this adapter

Xavier,

I assume that you unscrew your current 0.965/1.25" visual backend, and then insert the adapter directly in the Unitron drawtube, and that the 1.25" accessory is then secured by the screw.

How is the adapter secured in the drawtube ? Is it threaded into the tube -- or just a tight fit ?

Allan

Hi Allan,

Yes, you unscrew the original Unitron 0.965/1.25" adapter from the drawtube and screw the new adapter in place.

It was difficult to find the right threat that fits all the drawtubes. We measured 15 different drawtubes from different periods and they all have a slightly different diameter. Most of the old drawtubes aren't round. We measure to 1/100 of a mm.
We now have the right threat that fit all of the drawtubes. Not to loose and not to tight. Once the new adapter is screwed to the end it's really loctite.
The adapters can hold really heavy accessories without any problem.
Xavier

Right, I just scanned your pictures at the Yahoo Group, and could see the unitron thread on the telescope end :-)

Great initiative Xavier, and once again : thanks for sharing :-)

Allan

We're ready to start the production of the eyepiece adapters for the Unitron telescopes.

We will inform the people who ordered adapters about the shipping.

Warm regards,
Xavier
