Hand-grip type knobs
      #5792232 - 04/11/13 12:09 PM

On my LX850 everything is allen head bolts. Some of the things don't really require any more torque than you can do by hand. I am considering replacing those bolts with knobbed bolts so I can tighten/loosen with my hands. Anyone have a recommendation to source them? I was looking at these T-Nuts web page and buying stainless studs that I would thread into the knobs along with some lock tight or jb weld to hold them on tight.

I'd prefer to buy some nice anodized blue knobs though

What you're looking for are 'thumbscrews'. Just search google for the thread size needed and you'll get a bunch of results (but you'll have to ignore the torture device references!). Macmaster-Carr has a goodish selection, I've also found them in hobby and computer stores

Thank you. I'll take a look at those options. I need to measure the bolt size and thread type first.

I find these to be the best fit for my purposes. Mainly the Kipp brand.

ADM makes some nice knobs, and can do the blue anodizing. They sell some "off the shelf" for tripods:
http://www.admaccessories.com/Miscellaneous_Tripod_Knob_Set.htm?

But, you should email him with what details on what you're looking for. He does custom work and might be able to make some up for you. Not sure whether the cost will be reasonable or not, but it's worth asking. I guess it depends on how important that pretty blue anodizing is to you.

Grainger is expensive. There are other much more reasonable places to get knobs including the following:

I ordered, Threaded Stud Thermoplastic T-Handle Knobs, from Reid Supply via Amazon. I use them to mount my C90 and C-8 SCT to their wedge and the wedge to the tripod. Love those things.
Sometimes there is no difference in price or shipping buying via Amazon or direct and sometimes there is. Pays to shop.

I like that. You could also use a 'jam nut' or high strength Loctite.

Or, you could just go to Ace Hardware, which carries a selection of "thumbscrews" as well as other options (depending on the store) such as knob topped screws designed to be tightened by hand.

As to gluing a wingnut to a stud - well, if you want trust your equipment to this kind of a jury rig, be my guest.

Try some woodworking supply stores and/or web sites. A lot of people use them to make jigs.

These should get you started.

I like to make my own. Never had one fail and some are 25 years old. Those in this pic were under construction 6 years ago.
