Galaxies - lots of them
      #5792923 - 04/11/13 05:28 PM Attachment (40 downloads)

Hello all,

Last week we had some really nice and transparent sky (Negev desert, Israel, 6.8-6.9m NELM, without dust for a change), and I've decided to make another sketch of Coma galaxy cluster. This time I didn't use the "circle of death", but went for a wide field panoramic drawing. The faintest galaxies visible in this sketch are nearing 13.9th magnitude. Telescope I used was Skywatcher 250mm Newtonian, with 13 and 6.7mm eyepieces.
Annotations and original sketch are available here:

And this is the Hickson 68 group (with 4 out of 5 galaxies visible) and it's neighbour - NGC 5371. There is also a nice "albireo-like" pair of stars, visible right near the galaxy group.

The last sketch from this observing session was the PanSTARRS comet - which can be found here:

The last one is a sketch from march. It was made under less-then ideal ~6.0 magnitude sky. It shows Irene asteroid (bright star in the middle) passing between two bright galaxies - Messier 88 and Messier 91.

Michael,

These are superb galaxy sketches.
Seeing faint clusters of galaxies can really get ones blood flowing but sketching them so well is even better.

Frank

Michael,
Beautiful work. I just viewed many of these last week. You have captured the essence of what we see at the eyepiece.

Ken

I'm seriously impressed by your work, Michael. Of course, having a perfect sky is one thing, but making such beautiful and realistic drawings is another. My compliments!

Peter

You'll want to revisit this area with a 18 or 20-inch telescope if you can, you will be shocked at how many MORE galaxies will come into view. As it stands, I can't see this many in the same place under the hazy skies her with a 15-inch, I have made out seven galaxies though the last time I looked at the Coma Cluster. This is a very good sketch of the core of the Coma Cluster, you've done a very good job on rendering the varying sizes, shapes, and brightnesses of the galaxies. It's a good example of what a good 10-inch can do when the skies are dark.
