Anyone own a motel o' scope? new
      #5786313 - 04/08/13 04:11 PM

I just came across this company today:

http://www.pierplates.com/index.html

And they have a unique enclosure for a telescope/pier called a motel o' scope. Although I don't really care for the name it looks interesting for a small permanently mounted telescope but I'm wondering about the durability/protection it would provide.

Does anyone have one or seen one and care to comment on it?

Never heard of them before your post. Interesting website. There have been a couple home-built covers similar to this posted here. Check through the "post a pic" thread at the top of the forum, I think they're there.

Not a bad price, but I just saw a 6x8 vinyl shed at Costco that could probably be modified to either a flip-top or a roll-away (easier to stiffen the structure, I suppose) for about $650. The motel-o'scope is a lot more compact than a shed, of course.

I had a home made something like that once. Worked fine. A little heavy (I don't know if their's flips off or has to be completly removed. Mine had to be removed, so heaviness counted.) Counterweight bar, hanging down far off one end could not be accommodated in mine. But as far as weatherproof, keeping the equipment polar aligned, and all that, it was quite a plus.

While I can't comment on the motel o'scope, I CAN tell you Dan's Pier Plates is a great company and I am the happy owner of a 12" pier plate and then more recently, an Atlas mount adapter for said pier plate. Very good quality products.

It's a tad expensive. Once I realized I could build a 8x8 shed for the same cost almost...

It is a neat design though.

Seems really cool. So cool, that I'm tempted to order one. I have a perfect spot in my driveway for it. Of course there is no pier, yet.

Seems to me that is something you want to get as a package, or at least think it all the way through before you go down the road.

Yes. I just meant that I'd have to do some digging and concrete mixing before installing the Motel O Scope.

Thanks Raginar,

Go back trough some old Sky N Telescope magazines and you will
find that Harvard Observatory made a enclouser for their Harvard Patrol Cameras.

If I was in a situation that I could only have a permanent pier then I would probably go with an Outhouse style cover that could be rolled away. Would offer some storage and better ventilation options.

I was considering the Motel O' Scope for my permanent pier, but the base of the enclosure is also 'permanent' and intrudes on the walk around space I like. I felt I'd be constantly bending over it to get close enough to make adjustments to the mount, look through the eyepiece, etc.

I think the roll off out-house style enclosure provides more options and versatility.

This is a true story, so listen up.....

I had a pier (cement base-steel post) in my backyard, covered it with a Telegizmos 365. The wife hated it. Complained, complained, and complained some more. I showed her a picture of the Motel O' Scope and that pushed her over the edge. Said She, "can't we put your telescope in a nice building?"

BOOM!!!!!!

Three months later I had a BYO ROR in my backyard.....

Jerry
