M3 – SN8 First-Light new
      #5791315 - 04/10/13 09:14 PM Attachment (26 downloads)

Telescope: Meade SN8, Orion Atlas EQ-G
Camera: Canon Rebel T2i
Filter: Orion Imaging Sky Glow Filter
Guide scope: DSX-90, DSI III, PHD
Exposure: 32x20sec, ISO 1600 saved as RAW
Darks: Internal
Flat: Synthetic
Software: Backyard EOS, Deep Sky Stacker, Photoshop

We got a break in the weather just long enough to sneak in a quick first-light image of my ‘new’ SN8. I’ve got a few adjustments to make yet, but I’m happy with the results so far.

This is the SN8 configured for imaging. The dew shield is made from aluminum flashing and flocked with black construction paper. The guide scope is from a DSX-90 (the same as the ETX-90) fitted with a DSI III guide camera. I’ve got a few tweaks to do yet (like replacing my camera’s 1.25” nosepiece with a 2” adapter and making a Bahtinov mask), but everything is lined up and balanced. After using SN6s for years I was surprised at how big this scope is! The SN10 must be a monster.

Looks like a sweet setup John! Knowing how big the Atlas is, that IS a big scope!

Sweet setup, John. How does the focuser of the SN-8 compare with the SN-6? Is it exactly the same?

And speaking of the focuser, do you know what size threads are on the focuser of the SN-6? (The threads onto which you screw in the extension tubes, etc). I ask because I need to buy adapters to connect my Nikon camera to the SN-6, but not sure which adapter will thread directly onto the focuser barrel.

The focusers are nearly identical. The surface mount on the SN8 is a little different, but the focuser itself is the same. The threads on the barrel are not a t-thread so I doubt that you could buy a simple adapter. Not a biggy, the stock focuser has both 2" and 1.25" adapters. I used the 1.25" on my SN6s for years with a t-thread to 1.25" nosepiece on my camera. I'll be using the 2" adapter on my SN8 to see if it reduces the gradients. When I get a chance I'll also try the 2" on one of my SN6s.

That scope looks great. I got a SN-6 in eBay for a bargain, and I like it a lot. Yours should be even better.

BTW, I think the focuser works just fine for me. I regreased it a bit, and its great now.
