Best classic telescope ever

Figured we needed a vote on these also.

I vote on the classic AP refractors from the 80's. At the time they did outperform everything else on the market. However, not all of them were winners. they had some short focal length scopes that were not all that good.

I'm going to say Celestron's C8.
What a beautiful telescope. I've read that a SCT must be nearly perfect to work well and Celestron did it, and mass produced it.

Robert

The one that doesn't exist - except in Legend - the 8" Unitron...

Hey Zig sorry I don't have a pic of you near my scope. But hey you have an open invite anytime you're traveling through the area. Here's the "best" scope I can afford. My beloved Jaegers 6" F/8. It's been with me for 39 years along with the big tank periscope surplus erfle. It will "never" leave my posession!! Just slightly better than Harbormaster's best. Mike

Sweet Alvin Clark. The old Zeiss stuff is soo well made.
The old C8 is a good candidate. RV6? It made decent medium aperture scopes affordable. 1/4 the price of a C8. 1/8 the price of a 4" Unicorn. Arguably better images than both.
Price to performance RV6 hands down

I agree, what a feat that was to make this telescope!! I don't own the original mid 1970's version but I have an orange SuperC8 that just kills, optically and mechanically..

Because that would start the C5 war all over again

Wait,

I have a C5!

If someone can donate a Questar for a comparison we can settle this now

What a waste of a good scope. Send it to Scotland. How many clear nights do you have????

We are getting a lot of votes for the C8. quality of optics and being able to afford one. I presume this will be only the orange C8. I really cannot argue with this right now.

While the C8 is proly the most important historically classic scope I suspect that the Unitrons and Questars are the ones with the highest drool factor. Just go to the old S&T adds and you could be quickly reminded just how desireable those scopes were based primarily on the adds.

Of course if we had a shoot out between the C8 and the RV6 which would win. Oh wait, I have one of each. Anyone else have both? we can start the voting process. I think we should leave large high quality refractors out of this because not many of us have one.

Yes I agree the Unitrons and Questar have the highest drool factor, but will this be a vote on performance, appearance or both?

Plenty, as long as you're above the cloud layer!

This week's been all but did get out with the C5 a week ago Friday and had a look at Ms 35, 36, 37 and 38! Also had a few good nights around Easter, very unusual. But on the whole this year has been pretty poor.

I would say performance, portability and orangeness!
