JRCRILLY'S 14"
      #5802 - 08/07/03 11:37 AM

I'm curius in finding out how's the view with mister 14 inches. Is it worth the aproximate 13 months of wait? Come on JR, I'm drooling in envy? Give us some feedback or is it still in park mode?

Dunno how long it'll be before the skies permit me to get from the "looking at it" stage to the "looking through it" stage. I've been watching the thread over on the imaging forum and those guys are having a ball shooting the same area of the moon and comparing results. I really, really wanted to play but couldn't tell for sure just where the moon was.

I can report that it seems almost completely functional out of the box (without being able to critically examine optics or pointing precision). You may notice in the photo that it has a JMI NGF-S focuser on it to fill in until Meade sends a microfocuser that works. That's a minor glitch, as the scope would work fine without it anyway. I think Meade is getting their act together on these.

John, I hope you can join in on our little competitive nightly exercises real soon. We would all love everyone's pictures, good or bad. I can't wait to see what a real Bertha can do.

Good luck and jion us.
Charles

Hi, Charles.

It does sound like fun - and a good learning experience. I'm still at the "Why can't I get a good focus?" stage of this game but I know this group won't be too judgemental. I've used some pretty good instruments before and gotten some rather poor results so I hope folks won't blame Bertha (how did you know her name?) for the output.

I suspect the 14" is going to be a poor match for the kind of seeing we usually get around here - but I want to be ready for those magical nights.

Tonight's not very encouraging but I'll be out there if things open up - at least I can find Copernicus!

Hey my scope's name is Bertha, your's has to be Big Bertha so people don't get us mixed up. I have the 12' LX200GPS.

As to taking pictures don't feel like the lone ranger. I thought it would be easy when I first attached a digital camera. 5,000 images plus images later I'm still learning.

You might get a little friendly poking about some of the pictures, but it is all in good fun. I'm not to proud to put my worst shot on the forum. If for nothing else just to stir up the poking!

Anyway as soon as the high level trough moves out into the Atlantic and pulls all the rain with it maybe you'll be able to join us.

We're looking forward to it!
Charles

I used to have a 12" LX200 Classic called Bertha but let it go last winter under the impression that the 14" models would be shipping as promised. That was a nice instrument; I hope I like this one as much.

I don't mind folks poking fun at my pix; if I wait til I get the sort I see posted here sometimes I'll never get to post anything at all. I'll keep an eye on posts tonight in case anyone gets a good look - just don't raise the bar too high before I can play.

That is a beautiful setup JR, though I just can't imagine waiting that long for anything.

Telescope manufacturers are way behind the supply & demand curve.

Hey John,

Congratulations on your new telescope!

How heavy is the individual pieces?

Allister

Hi, Allister.

It's not very portable; the OTA, forks, and drive base (one assembly) goes about 120 pounds. The tripod is about 55 pounds (same one as the 12" model uses).

It's planted where it will stay for the foreseeable future. I'd be glad to report on how it works if the opportunity to find out ever arises.

Yes; I always wondered about those guys who get on long lists for exotic refractors - and those who waited forever for the 10" LXD55's.

I'd still never intentionally get on a year-long list (although I knew it was a possibility on this one) - but I can see now how it happens. I won't know how much the extra wait cost me until I make the decision to let the CGE1100 go and see how much I lose on it. I should have kept the Classic - I'd get at least as much now for it as I did in December.

Still, it's all fun. If I'm really lucky I'll figure out a way to keep the 11" also. If I'm really, really lucky I'll get the chance to look at something through one of 'em.

There's a Lunar/Solar observing party at the Club site this evening - I'd love to go but we're socked in here again.
