I am thinking of going with the NexStar SE. I will take my chances with the smaller one (4/5) and hope that the dovetail will add extra clearance. Won't be a big deal if not since viewing at the zenith is not very comfortable anyways. This won't be my primary mount anyways since, I will be using the AVX at home.

Jim and Linda, thanks again for you recomendations. Jim, I hope you did not take offense to my comment about your pink scope. I think it is an awesome scope and thought it might be funny to add something in your sig line in the spirit of the most interesting astronomer in the universe.

Jeff,

The Nexstar SE sounds like a lot of fun. Please post pics when you are set with new mount. It's always exciting.

Best, Linda B.

Just pulled the trigger on it and the dovetail at Astronomics. I will post pics when I get it setup. The other nice part about it is that I already own a Celestron mount so the comming up to speed time should be quicker for me.

Update:

Here it is. I needed the dovetail plate. With the focuser fully extended, I just can't quite get to the zenith, but I won't need to extended it that far to get focus with the EP. Plus the mount has a configurable altitude limit.

By the way, if you do find that the EP interferes with the base at zenith, you can add a short extension tube between the EP and the diagonal. Then the scope will focus with the drawtube pulled farther into the scope and it should clear the base.

Do note the focuser knob positions with the Celestron mount. Unconventional but it works fine.

Could you attach an "L" bracket to the Nexstar mount and then attach the AT72 to the bracket? That would solve the focuser issues but would it add vibration to the view? And would the goto still work in this configuration?

Moi? Offended? Not in the least. I bought a pink one just to mess with my observing buddies.

Regards,

Jim

Good questions. It's possible, but I'm not sure an L-bracket solves your near-zenith clearance problem unless it moves the OTA far off-axis from the centerline of the mount. It would let you use the focuser in ordinary orientation rather than with the plane of the knobs vertical.

Regards,

Jim

With a couple of adapters, it is a solid combination

I am happy to say that my setup performed well at an outreach that I did last night. I did not target anything at the zenith, but it would not have been a problem, since I was able to acheive focus well before fully extenting the focuser. Steven, I like your setup and may do that one day. Dan, thanks for the advice on the extender tube, I already have one for my dob and did not think to try it. Jim, thanks for recommending the SE mount. Linda, thanks for the tip on the dovetail plate. CN is great site.
