Which Questar 3.5 Model is this? new
      #5796731 - 04/13/13 02:39 PM

Hello all,

This is my first post in the classics forum, and I have an inquiry regarding a Questar 3.5 for sale locally.

See the ad HERE

I need to know which model this is, and its potential value. The only information I currently have from the seller is that it says "LDASH" and "4-1959" on it somewhere. I assume 1959 is the manufacture date, but I need some help tracking down the model and value.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Clear skies!

Maybe the mods will move this to the Questar forum. Lots of expertise there.

Serial number should be on the bottom of the mount.

Thank you, didn't even realize that there was a Questar forum. I just got off the phone with the seller, and told him that the model number should be on the bottom of the mount, but he said that he didn't see it...??

In this case the "4" represents the last digit of the year of manufacture, and the "1959" would be the serial number. So it appears to be a 1964 3.5" Standard.

Value... even with the full aperture solar filter it would be worth less than half the asking price.

Thank you Eric, I suspected that might be the case.

"One extra mirror"? What does that mean?

I see no power cord. Unless it's been upgraded to a Powerguide unit, you wouldn't be able to run the drive without the right cord.

It has older non-Brandon eyepieces, so it is indeed an older scope.

$4000 is a fond hope on the part of the seller. Not worth it.

The RA pointer looks odd, aren't they usually a clear bit of perspex or similar?

Re the extra mirror, maybe they mean the other eyepiece?

Is that "mirror" a full-aperture solar filter, perhaps?

The extra mirror is indeed a full aperture solar filter.

That's the Questar azimuth friction brake for photography. It is replaces the clear RA indicator.

Also I think the "extra mirror" the seller is referring to is the full aperture solar filter... which I guess could double as a shaving mirror in a pinch

I don't think too many people that own a Questar would take it to a pawn shop since the pawn shop is only going to loan you a couple of hundred dollars on it. I would get the serial number and call Questar to make sure the scope isn't stolen. Personally I wouldn't pay more than $1500 since it probably needs to go back to the factory to get serviced and that can easily add $500 or more.
