Lunar sketch new
      #5803364 - 04/16/13 06:53 PM Attachment (30 downloads)

Well I finally got the nerve to post a lunar sketch. I just started observing the Moon a few months ago othe than casual looks. I never appreciated it enough and am still ignorant of what I sketched. I used my AT72 refractor with a 5mm TMB eyepiece. I have viewed Frank and Jean's galleries and see what true artists they are their galleries gave me the inspiration to try. Please feel free to give me any advice. I am thinking of picking up a book about astronomical sketching.

Ken

Hi Ken,

It looks pretty good to my eye but if you have a sketching date and approximate time, it would be easier to figure out where on the Moon we are here. The crater at the upper left has a central peak so it must be about 30 km. or larger.
The post is a little dark, can I brighten it for you just a little?

Frank

Frank,
I sketched this on Monday night about 8 to 8:30 4/15. The large crater only had the top peak in the center showing light. It was right along the terminator. I tried another drawing but found if I included to many craters it looked worse.

Ken,

I thought the large crater might be Capella but I'm far from certain. Is north up and is the scope view reversed left/right?
Unless you are making a very large sketch, I would stay away from the textured paper. It is really a matter of preference but I find it easier to sketch on paper with less "tooth".
The crater rims look good with the bright highlights. Keep up the fine work.

Frank

Frank,
It is reversed. Which made it difficult for me to find more about it online. I just downloaded a lunar map an plan to learn the Moon better. I really appreciate your encouragement. It sure is much harder than it looks. I was viewing you pictures and they look so real, so 3D. I need to practice quite a bit more. I am enjoying myself though.

Thanks again.

Ken

Ken,

You are doing great, just keep at it.
Too many folks quit before giving it enough time and practice. It will get much easier and your confidence will build.

Ken,
Nicely done, very interesting technic, continue this way because you are in direction of coloured sketches, just another dimension

Thanks Michel,
I was happy with last nights sketch after some tips from Frank.

I always enjoy your site although my French is minimal. I was able to get through Paris a few years ago with some very basic understanding of the language.

Very nice sketches, Ken! Keep it up because I'm sure that with a bit of practice you'll deliver some real masterpieces.

Ken.

You're way better than me, I don't have the gust to start. So good job.

Andre.

Thanks Andre,
I just started trying the Moon. It's a very complex object I was baffled the first few times I tried to sketch it. I now realize I need to keep it simple a few craters for a beginner like me.
