      #5804669 - 04/17/13 02:33 PM

Hello,
Sorry I don't speak very well English,i m' French.

For my hollidays (August 2013,the 3th to 23th),i 'll come in USA (for the first time!).I will visit California.
There is,for this dates (3 to 23),any star party or other astronomical event or particular site in rapport with astronomy to visit ?
Thanks for your ideas.

It's a little further north, but this would be a seriously excellent trip:

8/6-11 Oregon Star Party Indian Trail Spring in the Ochoco National Forest.

In California, you simply must visit Yosemite. Go to Glacier Point in Yosemite on just about any weekend night and there will be observers there. Especially on the weekend of 8/9 to 8/11. Great viewing at a nice elevation. You may need reservations if you are planing to stay for a few days and you should make those now.

Also found this one August 9-11 closer to San Diego, but I don't know a lot about it. Maybe someone will chime in?

Thanks Stacy.
Oregon is too far,i don t have enough time in my travel program. And i have young children with me,long way road like that is difficult for them.
It 's ok for Yosemite, and we will try for JulianstarfestIf we are still in the vicinity on these dates.

Julian Starfest is pretty good, I went two years ago. Hot though! Keep in mind much of Southern Californias dark sites are in the desert and during August it will easily be over 100f during the day. That omits some great locations in Joshua Tree, Anza Borrego and the Mojave Desert. Northern California is a bit more mild during the summer, especially at elevation. Sequoias and Sierra Nevadas would be your best bet. Check out Mono Lake, you'll recognize it from High Plains Drifter. Should be in the mid 70's during August.

Are you going to bring a travel scope?

You can set up at Glacier point any night of the week (at least you could 3 yrs ago). And at the campsite there is a small hill with a clear view over the trees if you can carry the gear there -- be aware of the the effects of altitude tho' (3,000 metres).

Viewing can be spectacular to say the least -- forest/brush fires can be an issue.

Yosemite is very special place!!

Are you going to be in South (LA) or North (San
Franciso)?

If north -- I can tell you where to go. (public star parties etc).

North Cal is mostly not hot in the summer (unless there is a heat wave). San Francisco is NOT hot in the summer

Good luck

Lassen National Park will have a 4 night astronomy event the 2nd - 5th. I will be attending and doing public outreach with some members of the Astronomy Society of Nevada. I will have an Obsesson 20 inch f5 dob for public viewing. It's a dark site and there are interesting geological features to view in the daytime. It's higher elevation so the it will be comfortable for August.

The park doesn't have this years information up yet. The park web site it:

my plane lands in los angeles.I leave san francisco twenty days later. The circuit between the two cities is not yet established.I will take only a pair of binoculars 10 X 50.

I ll in L.A. the 3th to 5th,it will be impossible for me to be in Lassen National Park for this nights.

OK

Here are some links for San Francisco area Astronomy public events:

http://www.mdas.net/publicprogram/publicprogram.htm

http://www.sfaa-astronomy.org/events/page_offset:1/action:agenda/time_limit:1...

This is the Chabot space centre (near SF) -- it has a massive old cool refractor for the public:

You can probably find more stuff -- just search for San Francisco Bay Area & Astronomy.

You should see Yosemite. Try to get up out of the valley in August which can be hot. Tuolumne Meadows can be very pleasant in the afternoon when it is roasting in the Valley. Do the valley early in the morning before the daytime crowds become too much. Spend your afternoons in higher elevations. The night sky can be wonderful if you get away from any local light pollution such as car lights or camp lanterns.

A few years back the BBC made a list of "50 things to see before you die.

Four of them are within a days drive of my house in Southern California. Yosemite,Vegas, San Francisco , Grand Canyon.

In addition to Julian starfest that has been mentioned, remember Mt. Wilson and palomar are here. And Griffith observatory. Wilson and palomar is where they wrote the history of astronomy for the past century.
