I have a friend with an ETX 125 the dec stopped working. He said he sent it in once and it worked for a while.
He is offering it dirt cheap, What are the most common issues and fixes with these?
thanks..

I don't think Meade will fix a discontinued scope. So the 'fix' may be a new mount.

Maybe this: Agena Astros link

I would be looking at fixing it myself, he seems to think it is a wireing issue, at least that was the problem before.

IIRC, the most common failure was a broken bit of plastic from over-tightening the DEC knob.

Not an easy thing to fix without access to spare parts, but it can be done by having someone machine a new DEC axis clutch shaft and mating it into the existing plastic arm.

An easier solution might be to pull off the OTA and put it on an iOptron Cube or Cube Pro mount (plus a ScopeStuff angle bracket) and then selling the base and electronics in the CN Classifieds for several hundred bucks.

Larry, an intermittent problem is most likely wiring (either wire pulled loose or a cold solder joint). I have seen and fixed several. You can easily open the base to check and repair. If you look at jpg 2 in http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ETXASTRO/files/ETX125%20Tear%20Down/ you can see the wiring problem...they often get wrapped up and pull loose.

The easist fix is to:
-get a 4 conductor coiled cable,
-drill a hole in the base,
-connect it to the power panel,
-run the cable to the fork,
-drill another hole and
-connect it to the drive.

Replacing the interal cabling requires a almost complete tear down of the mount and chances of getting it right are 50/50. I picked up a 125 mount on the classifieds, the seller told me it had a problem in the Dec, but he didn't tell me he'd "fixed" it. When I powered it the hand control blew. The autopsy reveal some lousy insulating of a soldered splice in the Dec conductors that sent 12v to the microprocessor's data line.

If you find it's something else I've got lots of parts for these things.

Thanks much appreciated..The offer for parts is great.. I have always wanted an ETX 125, I have one ov the very first 90 Astros, set me back $350.00 in 1995 or 96,,
Have any of you had a chance to do a shootout between
the ETX125 and Celestron ?Synta 127? I'd be very interested!
I have the Celestron 127 on the SLT NexStar mout I really love it. I cant imagine it being any sharper.
The fact you can tweek the collimation while looking through is huge, it was ok when I got it but when I bought a Premo 1/10th wave enhansed mirror diagonal and aligned to it..WOW
I thank you for the fixes.. especially the re-rout wiring..
Larry

I wouldn't pass a good deal on a dead etx125 just the ota would be worth $300 in my book
The optics in that ota are well above the competitors for being a massed produced scope

Look up dr clay supercharge services
Arkansas observatory

He offers repairs and supercharges
My etx125 and newly acquired etx90ra get used more than my 10" lx200 classic
