C11hd vs Meade 12" f/8

Has anyone done a side by side comparison? Is there a thread about this already?

28lbs for the 11 vs 56lbs for the 12 is all you really need to know. The Meade is even heavier than the C14 HD, which is only 45lbs.

I have had my C11 next to a 12 on two occasions and saw nothing in the 12 that I could not see just as well in my C11. In fact the last time I did that comparison the C11 beat the 12 pretty badly, but only because the 11 was able to adjust to the dropping temps better that night. I believe the mirrors in the Meade scopes are much thicker than those in the Celestron, which causes them to adjust to temperature changes slower.

I am sure there are some faint galaxies or planetary nebula that a 12 could see that the 11 could not, but I will bet that list is pretty small.

As far as the HD vs ACF goes, the HD approach is better according to everything I have read. Apparently you have to have a corrector lens, as celestron used, to properly correct for the various aberrations in an SCT. Just reshaping the secondary is not enough.

Had my standard CPC1100 next to a Meade 12 as well, and the views were essentially identical. I can't speculate on the C11HD, but I would bet it would be better to the edge as noted above, and probably the same on axis.

I wonder if the 56 pound weight of the Meade f/8 12" is a misprint. My Meade 12 ACF OTA weighs 39-40 pounds with the Losmandy rail, the AP visual back and a2" diagonal, so I would think the f/8 version is probably closer to 45 pounds. Especially if the Meade f/8 14" weighs 63 pounds, there must be a larger weight difference between the f/8 Meade 12" and 14" OTA's than 7 pounds.

I owned both C11's and M12's and I prefer the views through the Meade. But YMMV.

Bill

The 56lb weight is listed on OPT's site. Meade has never published the weight of their scopes because of discussions like this one.

Meade lists the weight of the 12" LX200 as 34.66 lbs.

I can see the f/8 being a bit heavier with new focuser, but not 20 lbs more.

Link to the 34.66 lb weight...
LX200 Specs

I agree, there is no way the f8 ota weighs that much more than the f10.

I would belive that the true weight of the 12" is about close to 40 lbs with the mounting dove tail bar on it? I just measured my C11-HD with a focuser (jmi-elect.) and dovetail bar and its real close to 29 lbs...

Wonder if that spec from meade is stripped dowm ? Can anyome try theres ?
But I also agree.....specs from meade can use some improvments....

I was just looking at some used Meade 7" Maks and some of those seem to have iron weights built in, so maybe they're making that an option again
