Hey Martin-

Have you read this recent CN article? here Might add an interesting angle to your thinking on the Meade 7" Mak... that IS an intriguing scope to consider

Best to you-

Thanks for the heads up, Mike. That weight they installed seems to be rather unnecessary... I know I wouldn't be able to remove it on my own, for fear of destroying something. I don't think the weight will be very bothersome, but short cool down time would be nice. I will remedy that by keeping the scope (well covered) in my garage during the winter for a more or less thermally stable environment with respect to the outside. As for the weight.... I can still get the LX90 with added weight to 61lbs on to and off of the tripod without too much effort. Is there a way I can get Meade to remove the added weight so that I do not have to do it?

"Is there a way I can get Meade to remove the added weight so that I do not have to do it?"

Hi Martin-

Not a bad idea... Meade OR possibly a Meade dealer that has the skills and inclination? If you've got photographic gear, or a binoviewer, hangin' off the rear of the scope you may not need that weight... or perhaps a lesser weight on a dovetail rail mounted on the exterior of the OTA (i use this on my 10" SCT- very sweet arrangement, quite versatile!)

One other possibility might be Mike at I.T.E. Astronomy (here's their website)- i don't think he carries Meade stuff, but i'm sure he knows how to handle it. Actually, if you end up talking with him, you may even end up heading a different direction- he carries some really nice scopes, high end optically!... but perhaps still within your budget. It's at least a worthy angle for research, before you plunck any cash down
Best wishes in yer pursuit
