Collimation screw type on Edge...? new
      #5811775 - 04/20/13 09:01 PM

Just received my new Edge 8" HD.

I notice that my 3 collimation screws are Phillips headed .....is this normal?..i thought Celestron used Allen headed screws for collimation...

Any thoughts?

Yep. Meade uses allen head screws. I wish Celestron used allen head as well.

Just change them out to stainless steel allen/hex. That's what I did.. I have extra's I can send if you like. I had to buy 25 of them when I only need 3. They were only $3 for the 25. Mine are for my HD11. I think the HD8 are the same thread size but shorter.

+1 for swapping them for Allen head ones. Collimation becomes more precise and safer as you won't be in danger of a screwdriver slipping and damaging the corrector. Bear in mind that the screws on the EdgeHDs are metric sized so you'll need metric sized keys as well.

+2
I installed the SS allen/hex ones for my 9.25 Edge. You get the ability for finer adjustments and perhaps avoid the possibility of any future stripping of the phillips head. One less problem to worry about.

using a t-handled hex wrench makes it that much easier!

People (some) say that Bobs knobs are not that great in holding collimation

Thoughts?

I eventually removed BKs in favor of Allen head screws. My opinion now is that they're great when you're new to SCT collimation but as you get used to it and try to achieve precise collimation, they get in the way. They just don't provide enough torque and tend to stick-and-give which makes collimation frustrating. Allen-head screws due to the long moment arm of the hex key are easy to turn precisely and easy to torque down to hold the collimation for long periods of time. With BKs I was always tweaking collimation but with Allen heads, it pretty much stayed put.

Are the screws on the 8" Edge M3 with a thread length of 12mm?

Anyone?

I can tell you this when I switch mine to allen screws. I have been using allen screws with all my SCTs and as Tanveer says the collimation stays put.

I did the same thing and prefer the allen head screws. Better for fine adjustment and tightening down.

Do you know if these screws for an Edge 8" are M3 and are 12mm long?

You don't have to guess. Take one screw out completely and take it to your local hardware store. This is what I did.

Sometimes we assume everyone has a Home Depot or Lowes hardware store in their town. Major US city privilege bias.

Home Depot/Lowe's are pretty bad places to get hardware. I find more variety at the smaller specialized hardware stores. Ace's is my favorite in the Seattle area. They seem to have everything I've ever needed.

If all else fails, mcmaster.com will have what you need but it's never cheap.
