Jupiter April 25th
      #5823217 - 04/25/13 09:43 PM Attachment (22 downloads)

I was able to get out early before the thin clouds rolled in. I actually had about 20-30 minutes of excellent seeing until a milky sky rolled in. I was able to sketch Jupiter and get to see quite a bit more detail than the other night. I could see the Great Red Spot clearly. If anyone has an Planetary viewing or sketching tips I am interested. Or resources to read. I used The Gimp for Mac to change the background to black and insert text but no other changes were made, I was able to push the power a bit higher trying a 5mm, 6.3mm and a 24mm Panoptic 3X barlowed. All looked good and I may have been able to go further if the sky held up.

Jef,
Not sure on that one. Is it not showing as a circle? Maybe its the elipse tool I used in Gimp to copy the drawing to the black background. Hope it doesn't look like this to everyone! Mine is showing circular I am running Linux though.

Ken,

'Squashed' on my monitor too!

Not familiar with gimp (think Paul Abel uses it) but Corel Draw has a 'Preserve Aspect Ratio' command. Just a thought.

Dave.

David,
Thanks for the help. I have tried with your advice. See if this looks better. Overall I was happy with what I saw. Such a great amount of detail.

I don't mind at all need all the help I can get. I was surprised how quickly the seeing degraded. Went from good to bad quickly. Have you seen that quite a bit through the years? I sure enjoyed myself in any event.

Better - a tad stretched vertically.

Seeing: I term this part of the year as one of my good-seeing seasons. I find if I got a planet just on sunset the seeing would often be fantastic but breaking down within an hour. Then gradudually until an hour or two before midnight getting very good/excellent, with further decline just after midnight. The midnight part was in operation with my recent Saturn post ("Saturn Apr 20....") and just got it in time!

Dave.

Good to know it looks better. I am not well versed with Gimp so it took a bit to get it looking half decent. I caught Jupiter right at Sunset and it was good for a bit. I will use your advice. I was out early last night. I start work early usually before 6 AM so I am not a night owl. Which can be troublesome for Astronomy. Tonight I can stay up later since its the weekend. However, my daughter's like to rise with the birds at 5:30 most days. We are planning a trip to our local club observatory tonight. Hoping to get a nice view of Jupiter and Saturn with the 9 1/2 inch Clark Refractor.

Ken
