SynScan(TM) Hand Control Firmware (Ver.03.35) Release Note
Date: Apr. 24, 2013
===============================================================

1) Implemented an all new polar alignment algorithm. The Latitude adjustment and Azimuth adjustment have been split into two steps.
2) New adjustment allow users to set the maximum altitude for a GoTo slewing on equatorial mount.
3) Some bugs were fixed, including: PAE inaccuracy in some regions of the sky, frozen of directional buttons after starting from parked position, and incorrect tracking speed after GoTo at the Moon.
============================================================

No mention of cord wrap issue in Alt-Az Mode.

John

Do you know if the fixes in your number 3 apply to the mount in Alt Az mode?

Howard,

I don't know. That is all the information they gave in the Release Notes.

I tried the improved polar align routine last night on my Atlas Pro AZ/EQG. It worked *great*, although azimuth was kind of hard to adjust. One round was enough to get it to track Saturn for ~45 minutes without apparent drift in an 11mm eyepiece.

After the polar align I did re-align it and it was putting targets all over the sky dead center of a 20mm plossl. The scope was a deforked 10" Meade (LX-6 I think) SCT.

Can u tell us the procedure to polar align?

Is it the same as All Star Polar Align with Celestrons Nexstar?

My steps to polar align:
1) 2-star alignment.
2) selected polar align.
3) Picked a star from the list (Arcturus was the one I chose (and was first on the list)).
4) center star with direction keys on keypad, press Enter

The mount now slews off the star a bit and tells you to bring the star back only using the mount altitude adjustment(s) and hit enter.

The mount then skews off again and the hand controller tells you to recenter the star using the azimuth adjustment bolts and press enter.

I did this procedure and then tried some gotos. The objects were in the field of a 32mm plossl but about half way to the edge (like they were before the polar (re)alignment). This prompted me to do another 2-star alignment and gotos after that were impressively accurate. This was with secondary encoders disabled.

Anyone tested a better tracking perfomance in AP after updating firmware, in unguided shots?

I tested the polar align feature and it is working very good. The separation of the correction in Altitude and Azimuth makes it much easier and also more precise. With just 1 iteration of the polar realign i managed to get under 1 arc minute error of the polar alignment in azimuth and altitude.

With all versions of the polar align, I've had to redo the GOTO align after the polar align, then it works fine. With the version prior to 3.35, I would do a two star GOTO align, then the polar align, redo the GOTO, and it would tell me the error was worse, so I redid the polar align and it would have me back out most of the previous polar align. Redo GOTO align, get a different polar error, do the polar align, redo the GOTO, and final deadly accurate. I haven't tried V3.35 polar align yet, but soon.

I tested deeper 3.35. Here is what works for me:

1. Make 3-star alignment. Center the stars precisely and use up and right buttons to finish alignment of every star.
2. Make polar align. When selecting star do not select one of the 3 previously used for the goto alignment.
3. Park the mount and turn it off.
4. Turn the mount back on, select not to resume from parked and make another 3-star alignment.
5. You are ready.

it depends how much backlash is present and how the final approach to the target is made, I try to always finish with up+right during the align process.

Could someone please upload the firmware because
it is not found on the Skywatcher website?

Thanks in advance.

Here is the link to their download page. You'll need to find the actual update that's correct for your particular controller among the files that are listed.

The firmware doesn't have any effect on tracking. What matters there is periodic error and polar alignment.
