vintage Mirador 7x21 wide field 10 FOV new
      #5800739 - 04/15/13 02:41 PM

Hello,
does anyone know the Mirador 7x21 wide field 10 FOV if they are worth buying? Is Mirador an old japanese bino brand? And what can I expect from a 7x21 bino with "wide field"?
Thanks for your comments.

I would say yes.
I have a few Miradors (see below) and I love them all.
Mirador was soon to become Opticron, and you can see that the early Opticrons look the same as many of the Miradors.

In some respects, I would prefer this configuration to a 7x50. Mainly because of the 10 degree field, as opposed to the more tunnel-like 7 degree field typical of the 50mm configuration. The 3mm exit pupil is not so small (being the same as that on my home-made 20.8X60), and is particularly nice when dealing with a light polluted sky--but is quite workable under a dark sky, too.

Needless to say, this is a more than adequate daytime bino, where your irises are usually a bit smaller than this exit pupil.

I have a Mirador 10x42 wide field porro that is excellent. I wouldn't think twice about getting the 7x21. Just do it...

Hello Simon,
thanks for your answer and the link that I found very familiar. It is a nice gallery of vintage binos and I had many looks at it in the past, very impressive collection and very helpful before deciding for a bino! Thanks.
Regards,
Christian

Hi,
I finally got my little Mirador 7x21 bino. I guess it has BAK4 prisms. The FOV seems to be smaller than 10 but still fairly wide and the image is sharp. The JB code is J-B93 which corresponds to Seiwa Kogaku. It has amber coatings on the eyepieces and objectives. I had to do a little maintenance work on it because it was out of alignment and the right prisms had some dirt and gave a foggy image. I try to attach a picture of it.
Regards
Christian

That looks like a mighty nice little binocular. Another pic of the eyepiece side perhaps?

For all you Mirador fans in the UK... There is a Mirador 8x42 porro on eBay right now located in the UK with less than a day left and still at a crazy low price.

There is an elegance about binoculars of that style and finish that is notably absent from more modern offerings.

Either that, or I'm just getting too old!

Kenny

I picked up a pair of Mirador 7.5 degree binoculars a few years ago on ebay. I had acquired another Mirador binocular several years back with one side non-functioning. I want to say it was an 8x40 roof? But I can't remember. I sold it for salvage, and got some decent change for it. The one side that did work had excellent views in the daytime, as does the one fully functional one I have. This brand had at least some high quality optics.

Oh, now I've done it again. I should really wait until I collect a few before I start blathering about how great they are on forums! The price is going up as I post.

They seem to be aligned with a brand, Limer. The paperwork shows a European presence. The one I have has a warranty card in English on one side, Dutch on the other. The one I sold I think had something to do with Portugal?

As you can see the rubber around the objectives is cracked. Otherwise very good condition with some age.

Nice color scheme on the box, I think. Very 1970-90 modern.

Nice case. Kenny is right; there is a feeling of quality.
