The Rho Ophiuchi Nebulae new
      #5827533 - 04/27/13 11:53 PM

I have long wanted to image this beautiful region of the sky, but I didn't have a good OTA with which to capture it. With the addition of the 200mm Canon lens to my equipment list, Rho Ophiuchi was finally within my reach:

High Resolution version and more image information available at http://www.astronomersdoitinthedark.com/index.php?c=17&p=494.

This image was made from a stack of 123 subs of 5 minutes each at ISO 800 taken with a Gary Honis modified Canon 450D (Baader Mod) and a Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM at f/3.5. The camera was piggybacked on a Celestron C-8 and guiding was with the C-8, an ONAG on-axis guider, and a Lodestar autoguider.

Thanks for looking!

Looks a little "dusty"

Incredible image, Scott. You set the bar very high around here.

that is a beautiful area that just stirs the soul. The colors seem a little to saturated, but still beautiful. I have been wanting to spend time on this one myself. I thought in the 50mm to 85mm range for a wider fov. The longer I do AP the more I'm amazed. Thank you for sharing this image.

Wish I didn't live too far north to capture this stunning part of the sky. Alas, I'll have to experience it through other's images.

Another beautiful image Scott, albeit a tad saturated for my taste

An amazing image Scott! Lots of subtle dust in there. I agree with a few others and it seems the saturation is a bit much for what I prefer(seems to be the blue that is pushed). Still an amazing image.

Very nice Scott, there are a lot of nice wide field targets out there for a 180mm or 200mm telephoto lens. Looking forward to seeing more widefields.

Thank you so much for your very kind comments. This was a very challenging and fun image to process. The colors in this area are so varied, and there's just about one of every kind of object imaginable. I understand where some feel its oversaturated - I don't think I'd entirely disagree. I've tried toning down the saturation, but it just didn't have the pop I wanted. So, I left it as a saturation monster (my personal preference).

@Mo - your 50mm and 85mm plan is a great idea. This image will eventually part of a 50mm composite for me. Rho Ophiuchi is the highlight of the area, but the entire region is quite incredible.

@Warren - yes, I agree on lots of great ~200mm targets. I'm looking forward to grabbing all the great summer targets over the next few months.
