This is getting a bit customized outside of the CL/EB string. I'm in direct contact with the seller now. I can look at this today or tomorrow. The seller seems to be rather accommodating. I think she will let me open, pry, prod, and do all the things I do when I look at a scope. I'll take my 'classic' credentials with me. I'll also get pictures.

We are in email now, hopefully a call shortly. She has my number. So far, the only thing that would be better is a number sent in pm so I can contact a good TAK person while I'm looking at it. I'll check it out either way, but if I'm on my own - then I'm on my own. I know the basics well enough.

I think this could be a good thing. I've purchased scopes from a substantial number of this forums regulars. One of them, the Gramps, is directly in line with what you refer to. Tim53 found the scope being sold by a local person in CA. I bought it, but Tim got it, disassembled it and shipped it to me in 5 boxes. I'm still indebted to him for that.

Nah, Neil. I still feel bad that it cost more to ship it than to buy it! By about twice, wasn't it?

I'm going to let Johann go for the Tak. As I was telling him, I think it dates to the mid-80s, as I've not seen a mount with the olive green knobs newer than about 1985 or so. The epsilon 130s were made starting in 1984, and the EM-1 in 1983, so that guestimate is a pretty safe bet.

-Tim.

That wont go cheap, especially with all the bidders bidding.
If I didn't already have a Tak FSQ106
on a AP900-GTO ide be bidding.

It will be interesting to see what it goes for. It's a very attractive scope. I love the yellow. Is is a standard Newtonian RFT type reflector? Looks like it would be very portable.

The epsilons are astrographs with hyperbolic primaries and multi-element correctors in the focusers. They take "tak sharp" wide-field images!

I have phone contact with the seller and am set to look at the Tak tonight at 8:00.

The seller did not want to move anything so the pictures were taken with everything in the box. Nothing has even been taken out. The tripod legs are not there, she looked everywhere. I don't know about any hub part that might have been integral to the legs. What you see is what you get.

So far no one has sent me a phone number in pm. If any one would like me to call while I have the scope in front of me then pm the number. I will call ONE person while there. I will discreetly state that I have a contact if I get a number, no names. I don't monitor the computer so if I get multiple numbers then I will confirm with the contact and let the others know that I have chosen one.
If I don't get ANY number to call from any of you, I'll consider the weather and drive, and Heck, I might even get interested myself (but I very seriously doubt that).

So far, so good.

interesting scope. Not recommended for use over 100X. Not suited for high power applications. Older than the hills because there were no instructions for a CCD camera. Film only. There is a 4 lens corrector in the focuser. Make sure that is there Neil. I am glad in the pics I can see the eyepiece holder is there.
Can only be used with parfocal Tak eyepieces otherwise you might bang up against the corrector lens and it wont come to focus.
Well there it is in a nut shell. Agreat camera lens for taking widefield pics with your SLR.

Hi guys:

I did send Neil my phone number in a PM this morning, but I'm going to hold off on bidding if Johann still wants it. If you've changed your mind, let me know.

I would imagine the scope would work well with most digital cameras these days. It is definitely widefield, at f/3.3. I think the corrector is fixed in place or doesn't easily come out. Considering the condition of the rest of it, I would think it's still there.

It really is too bad the tripod isn't there, and puzzling why not, since the eyepiece tray and tripod head are there.

-Tim.

The corrector is not fixed. When aligning the optics it is instructed to remove it and put it back in place when the optics are aligned. That is why I said make sure the corrector is inside the focuser.

Tim I am limiting my bidding to a certain amount. Feel free to bid. It is just a curiousity for me to buy it.

Here's a linked image of a 1984 epsilon 130 on a EM-1 mount (right image):

And if you do a google search for epsilon 130 images, there are a number of excellent astrophotos taken with them.

Now I think about I did see the counterweight bar in the pictures, but did I see a counterweight ? There should be two of them for the 130.

Ouch! I think you're right - there's no counterweight. I think there should be one, though. Problem is, getting one the right color will be difficult, and Tak weights are expensive - I bought one for my EM-10. A 10 pounder, I think, that was over $100. Everything Tak is expensive.

The tripod probably looked very similar to the one with my P2 mount/FC-76 scope from 1982. Only the P2 castings are a pretty hammertone metallic green, and so are the metal parts in the tripod legs. The EM-1 probably had that gray-green paint color on the tripod leg metal parts and white lower leg extensions like these. The tray looks identical to the one with the P2 mount as well.

1.5 hours left.
I'm scrambling here.

The unit is nice. Electrical works. Motions are smooth. I turned both worms several round, no lumps or bumps. Optics are all there. I used the original .965 25mm ortho to focus on the mountains distant. Sharp image but still a daylight, no star test. It has a cheshire type collimation eyepiece, and a 1.25" visual back. Has the original compression ring .965 collet. Also has a Bushnell T ring, but I don't know what camera. Optics, cosmetics, mechanics, and electrical all looked good. It is 6 volt. I used the original battery pack with 4 D cells. The plastic casing has a split in one battery end spot which is quite typical with these holders.

No counterweight, no tripod. The hub is there. The boxes are in pretty good shape, nice.

Johann,

Delays yesterday, did this this morning.
There is a slight bump in the cover, but nothing on the OTA. No signs of anything at all on the OTA. My guess is the cap was dropped or hit while off the scope. The bump is minor (where there appears to be a chip in the paint), and can be pushed out with your thumb on a flat surface. It is less than it appears in the photo.

I had her keep the hub out which was loose in the box. I also took off the DEC lock handle so the mount sit square in the box. The flashlights velcro in place, small stuff but nice. The tool holder in the mount box looked home added and had come loose, all there, needs reglue.

I checked the tracking over 20 minutes and it moved two 10 minute marks on the RA circles, so pretty close by eye. I also pushed both control buttons on the hand trigger and could hear the motor change speed, but no visual check on that as the change is very very little by design. I did not mount the OTA due to no tripod, but all bolts there.
Has the universal adapter for the T ring.

I'll try to check in for questions. If another KNOWN KNOWLEDGEABLE PERSON here can ship this, then great. Up to the buyer if any one here wins. I can certainly pack it right, it is 1 hour 15 minutes round trip for me to get it.

Good luck folks.

Well, we can bet that the buyer is now doing one of two things after that adrenaline rush! Either kicking themselves or patting themselves on the back. And you can bet that the one who didn't get it is also doing one of those two things as well, LOL.

I've lost out on lots of ebay bidding by not putting a high enough max in and/or not waiting until the last few seconds. I put my max in 4 seconds before the end of closing. I haven't won enough times to know whether this matters or not. But I didn't want to take the chance that putting in my max bid yesterday would drive the price up too soon.

I'm relieved, but my wallet's not! I did go back over old astromart ads and saw that epsilon 130 OTAs seemed to be listed for around $2k, though I don't know whether that reflects the selling price or not. Tak doesn't make the 130 anymore, but the 180 is over five grand retail!

Tim,

You got a great deal on this one. I was the initial bidder last week to $700 or so and was going to fly out to get it, but decided better

The legs are missing, but the best part is you have the hub. That, to me, is worth more than the legs which you can find.

Tonight I am traveling to Chile to see Epsilon Eridani with my new Tak Tak.

Tim, I believe the 5 would designate 1985 and 08 would be the 8th one completed.

That makes sense. So the OTA is 5008 and the mount is 5231 (zooming way in on Neil's pic). It's funny they left off the 8 at the front, because my FC-76 and P2 mount from 1982 both have it and are 5 digits.

The TAK arrives at my house. Picked up very late last night (they have us drilling Saturday now, 12 hour days). The seller was releived to have me carry it out. I'll be taking more pictures and documenting the packing for Tim. I also have some respectfull wood tripods, perhaps the Vixen Polaris or SP legs, that will hold it temporarilly while I put the packing together. I also have reasonable viewing outside of the Denver Nebula that I can document the performance with before shipping hazards. I also have plenty of storage till shipping weather looks perfect. I also have friends to get over to confirm everything before shipping. I also have.....you know what they say about possession being 9/10 of!

Pictures to follow. Why not. I have to get it all out for packing back in anyway.

Tim, I'll get cracking on this today since the work week hours look horrid, seriously. I won't have the office ship this as I do my own stuff when there isn't time to get to the post office, or venue of your choice. I'll be doing this personally at the counter.
Can I have a night peek before she goes? What eyepiece and what should I check for? Everything should be padded, packed, padded again and shipped before the end of the week. PM sent.

Interesting, the counterweight is textured gray but the hardware on the legs is hammertone silver - exactly like the tripod legs on my FC-76. There are a couple scuff marks on the leg hardware, so I'm happy that these will be easy to touch up at some point, but I think I'll leave well enough alone for now.

The counterweight is in very good condition and needs no touchup!

Got the mount via USPS yesterday. Neil packed it extremely well. Everything was secured and unable to bump into other things in the box, and the box was well padded on the outside. There was no apparent damage to the cardboard shipping box even. Thanks, Neil!

Hoping that the OTA will arrive in time for me to take this up to RTMC this Friday. But no worries if not. I've got plenty of scopes to choose from, plus the moon will be large.

Here, I've removed most of the packing, just put some of the bubble wrap around the loose parts so they wouldn't rattle in the box.

I don't think this is a Takahashi box, though it's veery well made out of quality plywood (baltic birch, I think). Mount is in amazing condition. Looks almost new, in fact. Can't wait to put it on the legs I bought from Brian and hang the counterweight on it!

Well, the australopithefrak at the post office didn't deliver the OTA box today. Told my wife that it was too heavy! Can the OTA be heavier than the mount?

No worries, though. I'm off tomorrow after I localize Opportunity, in preparation for packing for my departure to RTMC on Friday, again after Opportunity planning in the morning. So, I can pick it up tomorrow.

Weights.

The gray one is the one I bought with the legs from Brian. The hammertone green/gray one is from the P2 mount. Notice that the lock knob is a lot bigger with the P2's weight. That's because the original was busted off when I bought that scope, so I absconded one from my EM-10 mount. To keep this guy all original, I'm going to be looking for another grey weight someday.

MONSTER 2.7" focuser, with all kinds of screw in parts for various things. I'll need to investigate these more carefully. For now, I put the 25mm .965 Ortho in the focuser. Stunning eyepiece, but like Neil reported, the secondary shadow is prominent when viewing in the daytime, unless you get really close - then it disappears. Focuser is rotatable (lock knob at base) and travel is lockable with a lock knob on the other side.

Saddle too. It looks like there are a couple mounting holes for a clamshell like the one on the P2 for the FC-76. But they're under the OTA here, and I doubt it would move far enough over to have them both on at the same time. Hm...

Those arrows are tape that I think reminds you which way to rotate the saddle to get the mount back in the box.

I, like totally dig those olive green knobs!

Power panel. As Neil probably said, there's a battery pack that takes 4 D-cells to run the thing. I've got the hand controller plugged in here. The "light" knob is probably for adjusting the brightness of the polar reticle (I forgot to check the polar finder out!). The "ratio" knobs, labeled up and down must be for adjusting the guide speeds? Seems kind of odd, though. Will need to cogitate and fiddle.

The funny edges on the panel are the protective plastic film still in place after all this time.

I may take this up to RTMC with me to play with. Or maybe not. It's a bit dusty up there and the moon's going to interfere with wide field DSO viewing anyway.

Tim,

Congratulations! WOW!!

Certainly appears you got a lotta bang for the bucks!

Well taken care of, or hardly used.

Looking forward to a first light report.

That maybe the Joshua Tree grab n go!

What do you think the imaging vs viewing ratio is going to be

Bill

Thanks Bill! I'll probably mostly image with it, but I haven't had it out in the dark yet, so I don't know how it does visually.

Definitely going to take it to Cosmic Acres, though!

-Tim.

Quote:

The saddle is slotted so the scope rings can be off-centered for cameras or guidescopes on the angle on the side.

It occurred to me that one could probably adapt a dec
Motor with a belt around the slow mo knob and avoid jostling the scope while guiding.

Had the Tak out under the moon last night up here at Rtmc. Weather is fabulous up here. Sure would have been sweet without the moon.

I found my favorite eyepiece in this scope was my good old Edmund 28mm RKE. Pinpoint stars to the edge of the field and tremendous eye relief - so I could wear my glasses which correct for minor astigmatism. What was really surprising was I would put a 5x powermate under the RKE and get a decent size Saturn image. I also got a good image scale with a UO 4mm ortho. Seeing was poor though. But this shorty nubbin isn't supposed to be a planetary scope anyway, right? It was too bright out to do much with any DSOs, but I did a decent polar alignment with the wonderful Tak polar scope and the drive kept Saturn put even at high power for long periods of time.

I ended up turning in around midnight. Planning on heading home after the raffle tonight. I'll probably take the Tak with me the next time I go to Cosmic Acres to start work on my observatory there. Be fun to hang my canon dslr or other cameras on it to see how it does when it gets dark out!

Tim
