On the calendar. Great folks, great scopes, really dark skies, plus a Caveman!

How 'bout some of the "East of the Mississippi" classic folks make the trip out this year?

I'm going to try to make it again this year, too!

Can't decide what to bring, though. The "new" old Tak epsilon? (won't be here for another week or so), or the old, old Cave 12.5"? <-I'll need to drive the VW pickup for that, which means tent camping for me (probably on the back of the truck!). Tuned the carburetor on it yesterday, though, and it runs SWEET now. But it'll take about twice as long to climb the mountain in it than in my van!

I think Bill has me on the hook for JSF after that, too. But I'm going to try to do both.

-Tim.

I can't Wait to spend the weekend with all the Classic Friends. It is always so much fun!
Well what is the (aveman taking this year. The Pearl has had 3 years on the mountain and has been way more work than any one really knows (except Steve) to take up there. Since I had a Stent installed 6 weeks ago I feel like this year I better take a break and let the pearl stay in her house.
So with no further ado This years Grab and GOOOOO Will be the UNIPONS 1966 Perfect 6" F15 Jaegers on my current project.
1960s Schaefer Mount will take the place of the 810

I am in the middle of acquiring this 1960s Schaefer AT8 (One Of The BUCKET LIST) Mounts every Classic Telescope Man should get to own or at least use before we beam up for the last time.
This will be a good size Grab and Go Mount and Long Focus Refractor set up, hey at least I can lift it.
The Views with the Uni-Pons are incredible I didn't realize how good until I had it up at Pinos next to a TAK 150 several years ago and the Uni-Pons was holding better images that the TAK. The scope has very deep meaning to me as it was designed by John Pons and built by him and I a few years ago. The tail piece and focuser are from a 1958 6" Unitron It is the last Telescope John designed and built and is a testament to his engineering and mastery of telescope design.
Sneek preview of the AT8.. I think once all together it will look like a 6" Unitron on Steroids!!

So the Pearl will Have to Slumber during the CSPAMP VI Romp on the Mountain. The Star Oak Observatory is a good place to live for a scope this size, at least until Next year.

SEE YOU ALL UP ON THE HILL FOR CSPAMP VI THE CLASSIC ROMP ON THE MOUNTAIN!!!

I guess the entire left coast has left the classic telescope forum behind, Tim, Dan, Steve, Lee, JR the new guy thats staying and a couple others seem to be the only ones left... I find it hard to believe how quick some folks fly thru the classic telescope hobby. Go like gang busters buying every scope they can get there hands on and then Poof they're gone.
A few of us must have something wrong with us. I have been enamored and fixated on telescopes and astronomy on and off, mostly on for 45 years. Until joining this forum I really thought I was a weirdo. But now I am starting to think I might have been right.

How about June 28th or 29th which will be last quarter. I can also do July 12th or 13th.

Do you think I can bring my Mallincam Extreme? I have it doing amazing things these days, but the monitor is bright.

I have to get my new beast cleaned up and aligned. It's a 12" Meade Classic LX200 coffee grinder. I saw one in 2001 and when this one came up I decided to get it.

Oh, and you may not know but Allie and I had a 25" Obsession with a Galaxy mirror for several years before we moved out here. It was housed in our sky shed observatory and was absolutely amazing.

Sweet! My favorite hike up there too, that 1.5 mile trail from the telescope parking lot to the top of Mt. Pinos is one of the most beautiful hikes in the world. I have not seen any yet but this is supposedly one of the places where the California condors nest or at least, used to.

It was great seeing a few folks last night for the preview CSPAMP. Johnny, Clint, Debbie, Lew, Carla, Ron, Dan, myself and others all made it up. Johnny brought his God-daughter Max, his dog Reef, and his usual positive energy, I had my Tinsely 8", Dan his 3" Clark and 6" AP, and Clint his 4" Tinsley refractor. The seeing was great for about 30 minutes after darkness and then the winds set in and seeing was poor. It was a nice change in that usually the temps drop into the 40's, but last night stayed in the 60's. Myself and Lew left after midnight and encountered a horrible accident 5 miles down the mountain. I guess Lew was one of the first on scene with the occupants still trapped upside down in the vehicle. I hope they all made it ok. After the officers let us through (quite some time), I took the 2 hr drive home thinking about everyone around me being drunk and stupid. Last time I do that drive!

Next up 8/1-8/4. Looking forward to it!

Steve

The ohhhhh moment of the night for me was the view of the double-double through Dan's 1920 Clark 3". It was as good as any 3" in the past 100 years. Amazing!

Ah but the best view of Saturn was through Steve's 8" Tinsley D-K, what a scope! That was super fun, but very sobering when I drove back down the mountain and encountered that wreck, minutes after it happened. Man did I ever count my lucky stars all the way home, I hope those people were OK. Four fire trucks and four po cars passed us as we were on the way down, they were heading up to the wreck.

Yeah Steve, that accident on the mountain was horrible. When we were finally allowed to proceed down the mountain, Carla and I stopped at the Flying-J near the freeway for breakfast. When we finally staggered into our apartment, it was about 3:30 a.m.

I really enjoyed looking at Saturn thru your 8-in. Tinsley D-K. Of the scopes I looked thru, I think it provided the best image. Another scope that really impressed me was Dan Schechter's recently acquired 1920 3-inch Alvan Clark.

I found a quick, dirty and lazy way to align my scope on Polaris in the daytime. I first tried this method last year to observe the partial annular eclipse from the desert with Clint, Debbie and my wife Carla. The sun stayed centered in the field of view of a low power eyepiece for most of the eclipse.

I have a vintage, but highly accurate Leitz Brunton compass. I'm able to align on magnetic north, then offset the polar axis to true north. Without further adjustment or tweaking, Saturn stayed in the field of view of a 3.5mm ocular for more than 20 minutes last night.

If this alignment technique works a 3rd time, I plan on getting the method patented, write a book, then sell it on late nite T.V., right between the slap-chop commercial and the one for erectile dysfunction.

There's one thing I'm really happy about when it comes to modern cars and safety regulations. I came across a couple of rather serious looking accidents on my way to Utah yesterday. First was a rollover in the median on the way to Vegas. Car was all crumpled up, but the occupants were all sitting talking to the cops. Second accident was in the winding part of the Virgin River Gorge. Guy bounced off all the guard rails and knocked the corners off his Jetta... But he was standing off to the side talking on his cell phone while the cops were arriving.

I do like old cars almost as much as I like old scopes, but if I'm ever in an accident, I hope its in one of the modern ones.

Sorry for the TJ.

-Tim.

Great to see all you guys!
The seeing was great for the first few minutes and Steves Tinsley DK really blew a hole in the sky. Great Classic Mirror put up a fantastic image of Saturn and later during the night resolved the stars in M13 like a refractor.
Dans 1915 to 20 Clark is a thing of Beauty, I had the mint 1947 Tinsley up to set up next to Steves Tinsley and Dans Clark Mount and scope looked just as well kept, "Like Close to new" and 100 years old.
Debbie and I took the new R-pod and 2013 Dodge 1500 SLT V6 up the mountain. It worked like a champ. So Dan and Debbie and I had Coffee on the hill in the morning. Great Warm up for CSPAMP VI... Climbed 7500 feet in 50 minutes and got 15 miles to the gallon there and back.
Wonderful Astro Voyager!!!

That mount must weigh as much as the VW pickup!

Nice VW pickup, BTW. They are rare as hen's teeth over here, eaten up by rust already in the 70'ies.

Hi Thomas. Actually, Cave says that the whole scope weighed 450 pounds. I was able to lift the equatorial head off the tripod and set it in the bed of the truck with the help of the seller. I was standing in the truck and he was on the ground, so I think I had the bulk of the weight. Fortunately, it didn't need to go far!

I'm planning on adding one of those pickup bed hoists to the truck before I use it to haul this scope around:

http://www.harborfreight.com/1-2-half-ton-capacity-pickup-truck-crane-1647.html

I'm fortunate in that the sides fold down, so I could mount this toward the back of the cab and lift things from the side. I'll be careful and not try to lift things heavy enough to tip the truck over, though!

I'm speculating about building an 8" refractor with a bottle jack crane attached to the side of the portable pier, to help lifting the mount and scope up on the pier. Sort of like those cranes you see attached to the side of a skyscraper under construction.

The main problem with large refractor portability isn't the size and assembly time, but limited lifting capability of the user.

I'll have to dial in to Opportunity and Curiosity telecons Friday morning, so I'll try to get up there by the afternoon. Will try to stay through Sunday morning this time, though.

Still haven't decided which scope to bring. The Taks would give me the most room in the van to sleep. The 12.5" Cave would require I bring my VW pickup, which means a slow crawl up the Grapevine and noplace to sleep (except under the stars in the back of the truck, I suppose).

Votes?

I'm wrtiing this as I'm pre-positioning all our gear in the front hall ready for loading Wednesday night, charging the batteries, and making out shopping lists and menu's.....Dan, we have you in mind, of course.

Weather look great -- clear skies forecast --whoo-hoo !!!

Anyone who is thinking about coming up this weekend.....JUST COME UP----we really have a great time, with great folks, great scopes and great skies.

Hey guys,

As many of you know, I start a new job on Thursday and taking a vacation day for Friday would be a no-no. I will be up there on Friday afternoon with a fully operational death star, uhhh I mean Tinsely 8 including what is close to an original pier mount that I will pick up tomorrow. I have not tested the mount at all, so this should be interesting. The motor is all wired and ready to go. I also fixed the slight tilt/movement of the mirror so collimation holds perfect east and west. Once I get the baffle tube installed later this summer I will update the thread on the scope.

If you could save me a spot, it would be appreciated.

Carla and I will be coming up late Friday afternoon with Murray Scope! (See it in my avatar?) We're really looking forward to seeing the Cloudynights gang again. Please save a space for us too.

I received felt, cork and hardware yesterday from McMaster-Carr to line the tube rings and finish the virgin Garth Optical Co. 8-inch mirror cell, which is heavier and more massive than the ones used by Cave Optical and Coast Instrument - the Garth is built like a tank! Also, the new Astro-Systems secondary holder is proving to be kinda problematic. I hope I didn't pinch the 1.25-inch m.a. flat making it fit into the holder. And the push-pull secondary tilt adjustment is squirrely. The focuser is an older 1-1/4-inch single-speed JMI - no problems there.

This old-school scope looks very 1950-ish. The last time I looked thru it was 50 years ago in the Spring of 1963. I'm really looking forward to 2nd light this Friday night. Hope you'll come by and share the moment with us.

We had a few hours of good clear skies last night. I gee whizzed with the Springfield. I set up the epsilon 130, but didn't use it last night.

Saturn was nice between high thin clouds, when it looked like some ody smeared grease o the optics.

Deep sky viewing was nice. It got cold around midnight or so ("cold" to a so Californian is like the 40s or so, but I didn't have a thermometer). I put my bunny suit and coat on and was toasty warm.

Sometime around 1am or so, it clouded up from the east, so we started covering things up and preparing to stare at our eyelids for the rest of the night.

Clint, Dan and I were yacking till about 2, when a breeze picked up and the sky cleared up! We were too tired to respond optically, and we turned in.

We've got scattered high clouds again today, and it must be in the mid to high 70s now. We're hoping for more clear skies tonight.

Tim

I've always loved the look of those rigs. The porportions of the mount relative to OTA suggest a proper mechanical/structural engineer was involved in its development. But hey, I'll just leave it at it looks cool. Wish I lived closer so that I could look through it and all of the the cool scopes that I'm sure are there. I would have to guess there are a lot of others, including long time lurkers like me, who get ther classic scope fix vicariously from CN threads like this. Many thanks, please keep,it up!

It was a good night. Seeing was pretty good on Saturn. And by the time it got dark all the high clouds had cleared out. It was warmer than last night, and it stayed calm the whole time. A couple guys did some imaging. I moved the mirror forward in my Springfield so I could use my 2" eyepieces and got awesome views of DSOs with my 40mm swan and 14mm ES 100.

Time to sleep.

A great time was had by all. Clint`s 6" "Unipons performed as expected, Great. Steve`s Tinsley was awesome on Saturn. It gave a stunning view at 330x. He still has a few kinks to iron out, but I`m sure that scope will be a keeper when Steve has it dialed in. Tim`s Tak and his homemade Springfield did great. The wide field view with his 40mm Swan was amazing. It is so much fun to have the eyepiece remain stationary while everything else revolves around you. Lee brought several scope, but once he and Steve got his C11 collimated, it rocked.

I`m pooped and I still have to unpack.

Thanks to everyone for making this years CSPAMP another winner.
Dan

WOW! What a great weekend. I am really tired, but thought I would post a few thoughts. I have some pictures, but the best will probably come from Clint and Lew who took some great ones.

Due to limited time and and aching back, I only brought up 2 scopes this year (usually I have as trailer full). A 70mm Celestron Flourite and the Tinsley 8". I received a call from Larry Webster at Mt. Wilson on the Wed before the event that he had a pier mount for my Tinsley 8. So, I drove up to get it and was darn happy to have it for this weekend. Thank you Larry!

Lee, Janice, Ryan, and a few others came up to the 8300 ft elevation parking lot on Thursday. The story was that they caught the biggest fish ever and no similar fish would ever be caught. In other words, the viewing was awesome on Thursday

On Friday, myself, Clint, Debbie, Lew, Carla,Dan, Tim, Jon/Josh, Danny, and about 30-40 others arrived on scene. The skies were 100% cloudy at dusk. By nightfall, the zenith was clear and some observing was done although the conditions were not that great. The temperature also fell from about 75 at 5pm to the upper 40's. For me, the best part of night 1 is always seeing everyone and their scopes. The parking lot was littered with all kinds of telescopes from the 1800's to present. In addition to my Tinsley 8 and 70mm Flourite, we had a 6" Unitron, 6" Cave, 8" Springfield mounted Newt, Tak E130 on 1980's EM-1, 3" Zeiss, (2) 3" Clarks, a 4" Clark on a #6 mount (Saturday), a bunch of small refractors, Lew's 8" 1950's Murray Scope, and a bunch Meades, Dobs, Celestrons, and more.

Attached is a picture of Tim's 8" Springfield.....

Saturday started as usual with everyone getting up late I had spent the past few weeks getting my Tinsley 8" optically ready. Unfortunately, I had only cleaned the mount, but had not re-built it. The prior night the old grease froze up even though the outside temp was only about 50 at the time. So, I headed down the mountain to the hardware store and bought lithium grease, steel wool, goo gone, and other supplies. I already had a bunch of tools. To make a long story very short, we spent a majority of the day under the canopy shade rebuilding the RA axis for the T8 and the Celestron mount for Clint's son Jake. Usually when I dive into a project I just have my own ideas. It was really fun having everyone help out. When the mount wad done, the RA axis was smooth as butter and the motor drive worked well. I will leave it for another thread, but the 6V motor of the Tinsley was not actually made to run at 6V, so the drive was a challenge to use. I will build a better drive corrector in the future.

The temps were warmer on Saturday with a high near 80. Cirrus clouds covered portions of the sky throughout the day. Clint and Jake provided the entertainment in the late afternoon with some fun guitar and banjo playing. As the evening approached, the skies got better and better....

Tinsley after mount rebuild....

Saturday night was one of those really RARE nights. On the Steve seeing scale it was a 9.5 only topped by the Florida Keys in Feb 2005. On the Pickering Scale it was probably an 8.5 or so. The object du jour is always either Saturn or Jupiter. So, about 30 minutes after sunset, everyone is looking for Saturn in the bright twilight. Once spotted, I tuned my T8 to Saturn. Hmmm, this is going to be good....

As darkness set in, I pumped up the power on my T8 and declared that it was the best view of Saturn ever. We then all started looking through each others scopes and I found Dan's 6" Ap had the best image ever of Saturn, then Clint's 6" UniPons, then Tim's 8" Newt, then Lewis' 4" Clark....and so on. Every scope was performing like never before. For planetary viewing, there is nothing like great seeing and a properly collimated scope. In 2005 in the Florida Keys I had no 10" scope up over 1000x. My one and only planetary image of my life was that night. I think it clearly shows what great seeing means.

Pic of Saturn (more scopes to come....) With the rings flipped to the 2013 view, this is about what we saw in our scopes on Saturday night at 200-450x.

Dan's 3" PawnStars Zeiss. This scope is another amazing performer. After viewing with it on Saturday night, I will continue to stick with my view that the old Zeiss and Clark scopes perform as well or better than today's scopes. The mounts and tripods are also 100% usable.

Saturday night was running from scope to scope checking out many different objects, tweaking collimation on others, and verifying once again that Takahashi mounts are to die for as Tim's EM-1/Epsilon 130 combo held M31/32/100 perfectly for what seemed like 6 hours with no tracking adjustments. Clint and Debbie's Unipons 6" with binoviewer was stunning, hopefully Ryan acquired some good images to post, Lee and Janice hung out with their 11" SCT, Lewis' 4" Clark is just so beautiful, Dan bounced around his 6 scopes, Tim hung out with his Springfield and Taks, Jeff with the Big Gun 18", and many others I am missing. Somehow the facebook post by Clint got shared and re-shared and re-shared and re-shared and we had what seemed like bus loads of people coming up to view through our scopes. The white lights were numerous from 9pm-11pm, but we really do love showing people the skies so a moment of bright light was overcome by a lifetime view for many people.

The night ended with an amazing view of Neptune through Jeff's 18" ServoCat Dob. I have seen Neptune many times and it is always ho hmm...next. But, this night Neptune was spectacular and Triton just jumped out of the eyepiece.

Here is the 4" Clark...

I am so sorry I missed it. I did not have the heart to come up after my dog Reef passed away, peacefully, Friday afternoon. He had an amazing life and was loved by all who met him. While he was completely blind the last few years of his life he continued to be an inspiration, and he made many trips up to Mt. Pinos and truly loved it up there.

I am back home unloaded and rested a bit.
All I have to say about last night is thank you mother nature for what was one of the best all around seeing nights ever. Man to have these friends & telescopes of this caliber all show up to CSPAMP VI, and then to have the heavens open the gates for everyone to see was in one word amazing! CSPAMP VI was one for the history books.
Having slammed the mount, Drive and tripod for the Unipons together in the past week or two I was nervous that she would have the usual bugs. In fact the only one was the speed on the drive controller was two fast while running on 12 volt converter mode and then last night I set it to 5140 and it tracked perfect! Go Figure..

Luis Ashelford and his wife Kathleen came up to experience CSPAMP-VI. He brought along his gorgeous 1929 4-inch Clark. Their trek up Mt. Pinos - a first time for them - will be historically remembered as the Luis & Clark expedition. (Luis is seen here alongside his Clark.)

Luis was in good company as adjacent to him was Dan Schechter and his stable of Clarks and a Zeiss, which I didn't get around to photographing this time but did at earlier CSPAMPs.

I brought up an almost (but not quite) fully restored Murray Scope. (You can see a 1961 picture of it and me in my avatar.) It's an 8-inch f/7.4 Newt. The mount is made of plumbing pipe tees, an oil-well drill casing and scrap iron and steel. The dec. axis turns on a full-length babbitted bearing and the r.a. employs ball bearings at each end of the polar axis housing.

I purchased a used Parks fibergass tube and components for it from Coast Instrument in June or July 1959 and had the mirror figured by Cave Optical in December of that year.

I sold the scope in 1963 when I enlisted, got it back in 2004 and brought it up to CSPAMP-VI for second light this past Friday night - the first time I have looked through it in just over 50 years! (When I last looked thru it in 1963, I was 19 years old!)

Here is a picture of Murray Scope's mirror cell. When I got the scope back from the 2nd owner in 2004, he had cannibalized the tube components for another scope, so I had to replace all of them. This is a NOS (new old stock) Garth Optical Co. (of Springfield, Massachusetts) mirror cell that I purchased on AM a number of years ago. It's built like a tank and weighs considerably more than the one I purchased from Coast Instrument in 1959. The Pancro sticker is still on the back of the mirror.

I need to mention that it was another Cloudynighter, Robert Burns, who did considerable machining and re-welding on the old, rusty mount to get it to the condition you see it in the picture above. I owe Robert a tremendous debt of gratitude.

Wow, this was the a CSPAMP for the record books..... The seeing Saturday night was exceptional. Clint, Dan, Steve and rest of the gang were all running from scope to scope whooping and hollering about the great views...Saturn, Neptune and Triton, the Swan, M13, M31, M7, M8, M57, M51..It really was a magical niight.

Clint's 6" f/15 Unipon with a binoviwer was so damn sharp you could cut your finger on Saturn's rings. Steve's Tinsley has PINPOINT stars like diamond chips on black velvet. And Dans' museum of classic scopes were giving everone jaw dropping views. Tim's Springfield and Tak 130 also collected a ton of" Wow's".

I was up really late doing narrowband imaging with my QSI... and saw M45 climbing up in eastern sky. while the Milky Way silently floated just a few feet above my head. A magical night.

To all you East Coasters...put CSPAMP on your calendar for next year - come on out and join us --yea its a long ways -- but you'll never have a better time at a star party.

Great weekend, once again! Great skies, great scopes, great folk, and me . Added a few new objects to my seen list, including Triton and a wonderful dark nebula. And every time I'm around fellow CNers and their scopes I come home with an urge to step up my ATM game a notch or two...

Did some imaging of my own Saturday, which turned out well despite a night-long chain of hiccups and setbacks...

Of course, I wasted no time falling ill again as soon as I was unpacked. Worth it...

Ryan,

Great image! With the parade of vehicles that night, this is a great image. Very impressive.

The parade of vehicles was due to Facebook. Seems our announcement online got "shared" quite a few times and we had about 50 vehicles drive up to see the views...all arriving after dark with brights on Even with the distractions, it is always fun showing non-astronomy folk the stars!
