Stopped at my local auto parts store to get more self etching primer. I also picked up some sanding primer. I want to use this to build up the thickness of the paint to be able to sand it smooth filling any small imperfections in the parts. Never did this before so its a learning process. Any help appreciated.

Finished! This took a lot of time and continued application of the paint remover.

Another part to the focuser. Getting soaked in the rust remover. Inside they used a rubbery red material to gripe but still to let the tube slide. It looks like latter they covered it in felt to add to the gripping ability as the rubber inside wore out.

All the paint and rust is removed from the Capt. Nemo focuser. Here is how it goes together. I have to decide if the rubber strips and pads can be used again or maybe I can find some material to replace them. They've lost their spring and probably why felt was added to them. I will put a micron on them and then go looking for a replacement material.

The rubber is then glued to the inside of the tube.

(Nice patina . . . eh? )

I wonder if it was covered with a Liquid Vinyl Plastisol Coating. Sold as Plasti-Dip Liquid-Rubber Coating. Its commonly used to coat plier handles, you dip it in and then dry it in an oven till it cures into rubber. you can mask off where its unwanted and trim with a razor while it is semi soft.

That is almost what it felt like. I've used plasi-dip before and it is a bit softer than this. The coating did not come off like paint and was very thick. I will have to do a little research as to what is available out there to replace it.

After looking on the internet, there are lots of companies including Plasi-dip that offer a rubberized paint in a spray can. Seems as if a latex paint can be based around a rubber product and work just fine out of a spray can. Coverage for one can is only 5 sq ft.

Alsacorp makes a 'soft feel' 2-part paint that can be made to feel like rubber, velvet, or suede.

I used it in clear form to paint over some automotive colors to restore the Velvetone tricolor paint on Tinky:

Thanks much. I too am looking forward to getting it put back together.

I have looked hi and low for a particular paint color grey. I pulled paint chips from 4 or 5 stored looking for a peticular color grey I think would look nice. I finally settled on a warm grey tone and found a similar color called ford grey. After setting the paint color chip on my bench and turning over a scope part on my bench, I realized the color is the original color used on the scope by cave! Guess it was meant to be.

I will have to have the color mixed by an automotive house here in town. They will get it right and give me the gloss look I am looking for. Also, I will be getting out the compressor and paint gun. It will do a much better job then rattle cans anyway. I will have to build a paint booth in my pole barn out of visqueen to do the job right. Can't use the spray gun in the basement! I have a 10 x 14 tent frame I can use and just drap it with plastic. We did this once for a 26' sailboat when we repainted the hull.

Must have gone up. I paid around $100 last year. Maybe $125.

The Nextel replacement of the original 3M Velvetone paint was only available in gallons, for $300/gallon, and you need 3 colors for the early orange tubes.

Oh dip it in plastisol and just let it sit out on the carport for 40 years, I bet it will feel a lot harder then.

That is actually a good point. It has been out in the weather for sure. I think I'm going to try and do this. It would bring it back to original.

For those of you who want to see one of these free of paint. Nicely put together.
